"Lady, you're my kind of stupid."

I grew up on Kirk, but Picard is the epitome of a Starfleet Captain.

Sisko was "The Voice of the Prophets" which is closer to a diety than either of the others were -- even when Kirk was thought to be a god (though Picard was also in a similar situation once).

I think the issue with Sisko in general was that he did not live up to the Starfleet ideal.
None of the DS9 crew did.  That was the point of show.
DS9 was an environment of compromise.  Most Starfleet tennants did not apply or hold sway there.  Nor did the Federation have the last word on what went on there.

I wasnt saying you were hating in Sisko, Lars, just that there's a lot of DS9 hate in the fandom.

A lonely chord, without a song.

I, personally, love DS9. But that's me.

"Lady, you're my kind of stupid."

Please remember, Lady M, that DS9 was not a Roddenberry creation.

The positive, optimistic outlook that was Star Trek, was intentionally eschewed by Berman and company for DS9.
I even stopped watching it for a couple of seasons.

DS9 featured plotlines where Starfleet ethics and doctrine did not, could not apply.
DS9 featured plotlines where technology not only did not save the day, it was the enemy.

Longtime Star Trek fans did not like seeing their bright vision compromised.

Edit to add:  Tora, I believe that's because you grew up during a period where DS9 was relevant.  That was intentional as well.

I love DS9, and so does my mom and step-dad who grew up watching the original series.

I dunno, growing up on all four series at the same time, DS9 was just another incarnation of the same world to me.  Some of my favorite Star Trek episodes, and my favorite character (Odo) are from DS9.

Only DS9 episode I've watched in a long time was the one in my Q DVD set.

...

I need to watch that set again.

I guess Star Trek is sort of like hamburgers and DS9 is sort of like cheese. If you grow up eating hamburgers, you tend to think that adding cheese sort of fights the natural flavor of the meat. But if you grew up on cheeseburgers, you think that that flavor totally fits and is supposed to be in there.

And I must admit that while I don't really bother to watch any Star Treks other than The Next Generation, I DO like Odo.

Penis.

First off: the strip's hilarious. I think this one may be my favorite. But I'm a geek like that.

Second: I enjoyed DS9. It doesn't nearly compare to TOS and TNG, but I enjoyed it. I especially loved Odo, Garak, Bashir, Quark and Jadzia Dax. And O'Brian and Worf, but I loved them on TNG so I just consider my love of them a carry-over. Kira...I honestly didn't much care for. I didn't hate her, but it was kind of like watching split-personality-woman on Heroes in the earlier part of the season...every time the plot was focusing on her and only her, I just wanted to get back to the other characters.

But as for Sisko? The trouble with Sisko is this: great, brilliant actor...but the character was tough to pin down. In a lot of ways, he was almost a Picard wannabe with anger issues. And the whole prohecy plot got really, really old by the end. I did enjoy the episodes that dealt with DS9 being something made up by a black writer in the past. That was cool.

But Sisko himself just isn't a contender for best captain...and that's why nobody ever mentions him. He could never quite figure out what he was, to me. Sometimes he was trying to be Picard, though he'd never admit it. Sometimes he was trying to be Kirk. Sometimes he was trying to be Jesus, which was just weird. And sometimes he was just confusing as all Hell...like when he was chasing that guy who called him Javier, so he decided to be Javier, be the villain, just to get this guy. And while it was an interesting strategy, "be the villain for the bad guy who thinks of himself as the hero" and all that...it was handled poorly. It was handled in a way that, quite frankly, really turned me off of Sisko as a captain. Kirk was a cowby. Picard was a strategist. Sisko was...rather unbalanced, mentally. It can be good character material, but...well, it just added to what I felt was an ongoing identity crisis for Sisko. I don't hate the guy, in fact I kinda liked him, but he's no best captain contender. And, as far as DS9 is concerned, he was too overwhelmed by all the other characters. They were so absolutely wonderful, and in comparison? He was just the captain. He ended up being a supporting character to the people who were supposed to be his supporting characters. Kirk and Picard, meanwhile, held their own amidst great characters like Spock and Data...and that's a challenge.

Edit:

Oh and Starlock? In compromise and whatnot, DS9 was not unique. TOS and TNG dealt with it. Kirk flew in the face of the rules that stood in his way, and Picard adn crew found loopholes up the yin-yang. Both TOS and TNG also dealt with stories where Starfleet ethics and doctrine did not and could not apply, and with stories where technology was the enemy. The real difference DS9 brought about was a focus on religion and more ongoing plots and subplots. TOS and TNG were more episodic; they dealt with continuity, and with plots and subplots, yes...but DS9 was the first one to really ditch that episodic, feel in favor of a "If you don't watch this week you've missed something important to future episodes" scheme.

On a completely seperate note, I don't understand the appeal of hamburgers. The cheese is the whole point. But, then again, I don't favor the taste of meat unless it's smothered in something else. And cheese...cheese is wonderful, magnificent, and can be eaten without anything else at all and it's still damn tasty.

Lars I would have your children if they also wrote hilarious blockheads.

If not we could lock them in the closet until they learned how.

Well everybody, I finally broke out of the update... lack... of... them... thing. And y'know why? It's because I DO love you guys.

And y'know, I realize that I've been really uncommunicative about this whole thing while it was going on, which was probably part of my whole little self-shame spiral that came from being embarrassed about not updating and then not updating because I was too embarrassed, (among other things,) but y'know what? I have to say that even though I didn't say anything, in the midst of all that, it was actually really great to hear that you guys cared. Knowing that people were missing the comic in its absense helped me get going back on the right track... granted it still took my mind a while to clear, but still.

So thanks for that. :^)
