Last week I downloaded and configured a chat script.
Two days later I realized my webserver was being blocked by my dad's router.
Yesterday morning I realized that my ISP doesn't offer additional IP addresses, preventing me from bypassing the problem.
Yesterday I managed to register the clubnowhere.com domain. That's right: Out of my own pocket.
About an hour ago, I got an email stating the domain was good to go.
About 15 minutes ago, I successfully tested the Club Nowhere Chatroom.

It's ours, it's live, and it's here to stay.

Here's the way it works:
Step 1: Browse to http://www.clubnowhere.com/chat/ and bookmark the bitch.
Step 2: Login using your preferred username and NO PASSWORD. This will log you in as a guest.
Step 3: Choose your colour scheme. (I happen to like Black, and Beige is the default.)
Step 4: Chat to your heart's content.
Step 5: ???
Step 6: Profit!

At this time, I'm the only mod/admin, and I really don't do much in the way of moderating. If there's enough use, I'll likely be looking to find some other users who would be willing to help moderate. Also, keep an eye on this thread. Any updates, notifications, or available feature descriptions will be posted here. I do plan to expand and customize the site further.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS & UPDATES

Reminder #1
Please remember to use the logout button in chat instead of simply closing your browser. The reasons for this are a bit technical, but this is VERY important. The button can be found under your user name on the right-hand panel AND on the top left of the chat window.

Quick update:

1. The chatroom supports BBCode so, for example, posting an image in the chat works the same way as it does here on Zeta. In fact, the script I used was designed to fully integrate into SMF, as well as phpBB, and a few others. I only ask that you exercise some judgement and restraint about what images are posted in chat. It's my ass on the line here, and I (or any mods) will gladly delete any visual content which is, at the mod staff's sole discretion, deemed illegal and/or extremely offensive.

2. Your preferred colour style likely won't be remembered unless you have a registered account. (Really, user registration is at the top of the "fix it" list.)

3. There are both public and private channels available, so feel free to chat privately. You can feel secure in the knowledge that I can't see the private chats on my end. The server the site is on is somewhere in California, and I don't have that kind of access available to me anyway.

4. There's sound in there too, although it doesn't work in Firefox 3. This is a known issue, and I'll be updating once I see a fix has been released.

5. You'll notice a few familiar faces at the bottom of the chat window.

Hmm.. are you going to the correct site?
The old link is still dead as a nail, knob, and knocker.
New link is new. ~~Might still take a couple of days for the DNS to finish propagating, but it should be okay by now. Have you tried pinging or tracerouting the domain?~~ Wait.. Amanda's on. So it's not a network issue.

Other than that, your browser should have both cookies and javascript enabled.
No other bells or whistles needed, I would think.

Actually, that's a normal function of the script. The chatroom has a timeout setting, and people who timeout don't necessarily get logged out right away. This happens when someone closes the browser window instead of clicking the logout button, for instance.

What happens is when any activity occurs (such as messages during busy times and new user logins at the slow points), the script automatically checks the list of users and boots people who've timed out or lost connection to the server, and our friendly neighborhood Nowherebot notifies us.

I suspect it's not perfect, but in general it seems to do the trick.
