I've always taken comfort in the idea that if Mormonism is the one true faith, I can get into heaven without having to believe in all the weird stuff they do as long as my great-great-grandnephew converts and remembers to posthumously baptize me.
My 2¢.

From the point of view of a person of faith, I already have plans that I am very much hoping and striving for. Don't you fucking dare try to reschedule me and put me on your itinerary. I want the one I chose, not the one you chose and have decided I ought to want too. I don't think some posthumous baptism would actually keep me from what I am looking forward to, but it very well might tangle up the path there. The thought of some busybody mucking it up for me like that is deeply insulting and makes me really fucking angry.

Which is why Orson Scott Card's idea of a Speaker For the Dead struck such a strong chord with me.

That's what I'm planning on having at my funeral. I'm gonna have to write up a journal of my fuck-yous and thank-yous to get them to say :)

*tilts head* See, okay, I can understand [kinda, sorta, still not really] doing that for someone who died y'know, yesterday. Or last week. Maybe even last month. But -

Well, that's how it started, from what I've read. One of Joseph Smith's little brothers died suddenly right after birth, in the manner of pre-antiseptic unassisted home childbirths -- so suddenly that he never got a chance to be baptized. Smith couldn't stand the idea that his brother couldn't go straight to Heaven because of Earthly circumstances, but couldn't square infant blessedness with original sin. Instead of doing something sensible and challenging Saint Augustine, he decided he could go ahead and baptize his brother anyway. Now, I don't agree with this move... but I can understand why he did it.

All the rest is the result of fundamentalists who took this tiny loophole and widened it to its logical endpoint. Which is, btw, why Mormons haven't stopped doing it even when the bishops agreed not to do it. Who cares what the boss says? This is right!!! and to Sheol with anyone who says otherwise. (Including the people we are 'saving'.)

I would find it annoying if that actually became part of the process of the afterlife.  "Hi! Would you like a free offer to switch at the last minute to MORMONISM?" .......

.... it's posthumous spam. That's what it is.

I have a feeling that would be the spiritual equivalent of going up to those lines of people camped outside an Apple store and asking them if they'd like to buy a Zune....

Also, yes, that who infant sibling dying at childbirth would explain quite a bit. Sad, but injects a small amount of reason into the whole thing.

...on a completely bizarre sleep schedule.  Unsurprising, but still.  I used to find naps to not be worthwhile because of how disoriented they tended to leave me, but with Alpha's arrival, sleeping more than three hours at a time is a thing of the past.

Nooooooooo!

We love hearing about babies! Forum babies are worthwhile babies - unlike some little whippersnappers, they have awesome parents and thus their exploits are interesting and often made of win.

Besides, we already have many threads that go well with baby stuff - Happy Thoughts, Daily Revelations, WTMI, PYP, Contains Cute Things.

But, come to think of it, an all-babies-all-the-time network thread might also be a worthwhile addition :D

...having a much nicer birthday than last year. Of course, considering that last year I broke my leg and had to have urgent orthopedic surgery, that is not a terribly high bar to surpass.

...would love a baby things thread but do not think that this should require exile of all baby things to that thread. Exceptions may be made for controversial topics such as poop.
