SOPA/PIPA/OPEN
« on: January 20, 2012, 09:07:42 AM »
If the mods want this in Debate, feel free to move it over; I somehow suspect we're all in agreement on the topic, however, so... Chatter seems more suitable.

We don't have a general discussion thread on SOPA/PIPA and OPEN; it seems useful to have a place to discuss it as a whole.

Let's get things started with a bit of news:

The vote on PIPA that was scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed:
Quote
@SenatorReid
 In light of recent events, I have decided to postpone Tuesday's vote on the PROTECT IP Act #PIPA

Of course, that doesn't mean that PIPA's dead, let alone SOPA. The official stance is that it's "postponed" until "the legitimate issues raised by many about this bill [can] be resolved". Sigh.

I haven't heard a lot about OPEN yet, though. Anyone have any good information on what it is and whether or not it's actually better than SOPA/PIPA?

Well, I do know that OPEN allows for due process for all sides during all steps of any website shutdown, which is something neither PIPA nor SOPA allow for.  Also it was introduced in part by Ron Wyden, who has been fighting PIPA from the start.

Here is an infographic that compares OPEN to SOPA and PIPA.

And here is the full text of the bill.
