You're surrounded by armed bastards!

Okay, so I run this place. Big whoop. You lot are what make it matter. SO it's only fitting you should have a say in what new features get implemented. Thus it is that I'm creating this thread, where you can post your ideas about what features zCh should have. Go wild, the worst I can say is no.

    Stuff that's already been suggested:

  • your_user_name@zetachannel.com email addresses (Redirects and full mailboxes)
  • A better summary page for recent/today's posts (longer list, who posted, time, etc).
  • Thicker navigation, aka, a way to access sub-fora from any-page, whether it's sidebar, top whatever (and if the first one is done, it could replace that in the sidebar)

Could I have an option for more listed recently updated threads?
I'd like that one, too...

I seem to be unable to "watch" individual threads, only whole boards.

This didn't used to be the case. I would like a return to the prior functionality.

Or ... maybe I am missing something?

Would it be possible to have the Login form on the front page when you're not logged in, instead of a link to it? (Yes, I'm a lazy slob, why do you ask?)

I was trying to preview a post earlier and I noticed that when you do so, there is no background, only the blue of the underlying site. I was wondering if you could make it so that there is a grey (or any other colour really, pink, lavender) box so that you can read the text without highlighting it. Perdy pleaaaaase?

Thirded.

Failing that, I'd really like it if, when I clicked 'Login' from inside a thread, I popped back to the screen I was on after logging in.  I thought it used to do that, but now it keeps taking me back to the main screen and I have to navigate back.  Not a BIG deal, just a little annoying.

Would it be possible to be reading a thread and see who else was reading it at the moment the page loaded for you? Like, "Badger, Major, thedrunkenmonkey, 12 Guests are reading this thread".

Possible, but I'd have to figure out how to display it properly, without breaking the existing layout.

I was thinking in the bar at the top or bottom that shows the heirarchy of forum, subforum, and thread. It could be in smaller font or italic or something.

But, anyway. Fair enough. As always, your call.

So I was discussing with Kyle today, a feature I'd like to see implemented on the boards.

I'm looking for a way of blocking posts from particular users. It's getting ridiculous that I can't browse the forum without my blood pressure shooting up and having to turn my back and walk away from the site.

I got the idea when I setup my profile to block PMs from another user. It seems to me that it would be fairly simple to add a feature that allows me to browse Zeta without seeing posts from users specified on a list, much like the PMs.

Now.. Kyle's told me that he has such a feature ready to be implemented, but that it has been left out for any number of reasons or opinions. Personally, I don't understand why. If we can block PMs, then why shouldn't we be able to block posts? What's the point of adding one feature, but not adding functionality that goes hand in hand with it?

I'd like to know if this could be done. I feel that the need is there.

The idea has come up before, perhaps in this very thread.

Slack.

Exactly.  If you block someone then you don't see their posts and so you either end up doing what Z said or making the same points as them and now your preference has ended up annoying other people.  If you had a way to check and make sure every post you're making isn't going to end up being the same thing said by the person you blocked then that might be fine... but then you also might as well have not blocked the person in the first place.

My point was that it's not YOUR blood pressure. It's MINE.

But that's fine.

Slack.

But don't you see how it could lead to frustration in others with a bunch of people all talking past each other because none of them watch each other's posts?

My point was that it's not YOUR blood pressure. It's MINE.

But that's fine.

I guess my response to that is that YOU are the custodian of your blood pressure; it's not the responsibility of the community to restructure or inconvenience itself because you can't get along with someone else.

Sometimes, posters get to me.  I walk away for a little while.  Or maybe, just maybe, I reread what they said and try to find some common ground.

There are people I don't get along with.  In the past, there have been people I didn't get along with that I now get along with.  Were I able, I'd have blocked Gwoo years ago.  Then I'd have missed a chance to engage in reasonable dialogue and reach a point with him where I consider him a friend.

One of the things that I have always liked about this community, which has somewhat fallen by the wayside, is that even if I didn't like or agree with someone on one topic, then there was often something else I did agree with him on.  TIP is a perfect example.  We fight and make each other crazy about some things.  But there are things we do agree on, and we don't let the fact that we fight about other things get in the way when we do agree.  Even when he's frustrating me because he's so very wrong about something, I don't stop respecting him or valuing the things he contributes to the community.

Fae irks a lot of people.  She knows this.  But she also often makes a lot of good points and she has a really good heart and a lot of compassion.  Demanding a forum change that will inconvenience or annoy the rest of us because you are unable to reconcile your differences with her seems a little, I dunno...nanny-state?

There are kangaroos in the world

Besides, if you don't like someone's posts you can just stop reading after the name. I do that quite some, and I'm sure some people do it to me...

On the other hand, not having the ability to block people hasn't stopped a whole billion of misunderstandings and reposting the same point over and over again anyway...
