You're surrounded by armed bastards!

I'll keep this simple.

By using this site, you assert that:
  • You are 18 years of age or older
  • You agree to follow the rules or suffer the consequences
The rules:

You cannot:
  • Troll, or feed trolls the attention they crave
  • Flame or flamebait
  • Advertise a product or service without the admin's personal approval.
  • Harass other users, sexually or otherwise
  • embed adult images/movies in your posts, except where otherwise marked by the admin
  • Embed any flash in your posts that does not have an explicit start/stop button
  • Use leetspeak without irony
  • Use racial epithets except in the context of a discussion of same, or make personal insults
  • Threaten other users
  • Hack, crack, or otherwise mess with the server(s) on which this site runs, or threaten to do so

You can:
  • Link to adult content, if you clearly mark it with [nsfw]
  • Curse, swear, etc. Fuckin' Eh
  • Do anything not prohibited by a rule.

You must:
  • Use proper grammar, punctuation and spelling at all times. Zeta Channel provides a spellchecker supporting .uk, .ca, and .us English. If in doubt, use it.
  • Keep threads at least marginally on-topic. If it goes too far, the mods and admin reserve the right to fork it off into a new thread.
  • Start threads in the appropriate boards. Threads that don't fit can and will be moved at mod/admin discretion.

I claim full copyright on all original stylistic element of this site, such as the logo. The contents of your posts, including images (provided you created them) belong to you.

This forum allows you to link your profile to an external avatar image. If you choose to use this option (and we encourage you to do so!) please make it 100x100 pixels in size. Animation is, by default, OK, but the admins reserve the right to change your avatar at their own discretion.

This forum allows you to create a signature, and attach it to your posts. If you choose to use this option (and we encourage you to do so!), your signature should not have more than five lines of text. If you like, you may include one non-animated image in your signature, no larger than 40 pixels high by 100 pixels wide. Smilies do not count toward this limit; you may have smiley of your choice, out of the ones zCh provides, in your signature.

When posting a link that has a long URL, please encapsulate it behind anchor text, like this.

The mods and admins reserve the right to edit your posts and profile information at their own discretion. If you believe your post was edited unnecessarily, PM the admin with your grievance.

On this forum, you will, most likely, eventually come across statements you find offensive. That's fine; you have every right to take offense at anything you like, or don't like. What's not fine is expecting the staff to censor someone's writing just because you don't like it. You do not have a right to be protected from being offended, and I'm not extending any similar privilege.

These rules are subject to change, and it's your job to keep abreast of the changes. Punishments for violations are at the admins' and moderators' sole discretion.

The mods and the admin have lives outside the forums and, based on all available data, are not your mother.  While moderators and admin will do their best to accommodate you, if you have a disagreement with another poster please attempt to resolve your differences on your own before bringing it to a moderator/admin's attention.

Edit to Add Jul 19, 2008:  If you say you're going to leave the mod staff will be sure to help you along.  Threatening to leave the forum as a dramatic technique will not be tolerated.  If you say you're going to leave the forum the mod staff will ban you account to help you follow through on your actions.  We're here to help.

If you want to get litigious about it, I can amend the TOS to specify this stuff. Something like:

Where the Content Removal Policy is something like:
If you really want this to be the policy, you'd better. Right now it says "your content is yours and you can do whatever with it", and turns out that just ain't so.

Quote
TIP: I'm not saying that people can't delete their content; that would be wrong. I'm saying that replacing the content with an empty shell is defacement. There's an important difference.
...how on earth is it defacement? It "interrupts the flow of a thread", sure, but so do a lot of regular posts.

Also, if we can't delete our posts and we can't delete the content of our posts, you are in fact saying that people can't delete their content. Because right now, if I want to delete a bunch of my content, I'm apparently in deep shit for editing my posts and I have no other way of getting rid of it.

It was the best metaphor I could come up with on short notice.  And I would be honored to have you paint the wall out back.  You may retain rights to color choice, pictorial content, and a right of reproduction of said artwork in the event that said reproduction should bring you some economic stimulus, however, I retain rights and ownership to the wall, and the original picture.  I also reserve the right to paint over said artwork should you paint those silly Wigglestm boinking those poor yellow duckies....again!   Tongue

Stepping in for a moment: Kyle (Mods?) would it be feasible to have a user-side delete option for our posts? Other places I've been have provide this accommodation.

Can someone articulate why Zeta doesn't have this option, if there is something beyond a preference for the design of the site?

Just curious.

I *heart* pie (sexily).

So, I can see this being annoying if I was in some Debate thread, and said something people disagreed with, and then went back and deleted it after people had responded to it. But what if I put something in Venting when I was stressed, and then later regretted it, so I went back and deleted it? And no one had commented? Is that really "defacing"?

You could use the "Report to Moderator" button on your own post, but again, that's subject to mod discretion.

Yes, but if I put my scrapbook on your coffee table, and try to take it back, or take a picture out of it, and I need your permission to do any of that, then the book isn't mine anymore.  If you tell everyone, "Oh yeah, that's her book, she can do anything she wants with it" but then you limit my ability to do that, you aren't being equitable or honest.

So, if you leave your scrapbook on my coffee table, and want it back RIGHT NOW, even though I'm on vacation in a bar in Tijuana, drinking Mezcal by the litre and watching a chick blow a donkey, you can break into my house and scratch up my table to get it? Not a chance. You just have to wait until I get back.

If you really want this to be the policy, you'd better. Right now it says "your content is yours and you can do whatever with it", and turns out that just ain't so.
...how on earth is it defacement? It "interrupts the flow of a thread", sure, but so do a lot of regular posts.

It's defacement because it leaves a content-free gap in the thread.

Sure you do. I delete posts for people all the time. I don't mind a bit. What gets my goat is seeing dozens or hundreds of posts hollowed out, leaving a shell of a post with a single period for content.

As for giving you all a delete button for your own posts, as I told fey, the permissions system on zCh is due for an overhaul, and I'll consider making that part of it.

Vorsaga isn't part of N_F, she can't see that post Kyle.

You're extending the metaphor.  But honestly, I think just adding a delete button would fix most, if not all of the concerns of people who are concerned.  As long as we have a way to remove content that doesn't break the rules, piss people off or scratch up the coffee table and break in the lock, everyone's happy, right?

I don't think that every delete or edit is defacing the site (I even had to edit my previous post just now), but I think there is the potential for defacement.  If someone who is very vocal in the threads just deleted all their posts, the place would be in somewhat of a shambles.  I think Kyle (and the rest of us) have an expectation of order within threads.  But a vent that was made in a stressed moment could probably be worked out directly with a mod.

I think a user-side delete button would be an adequate solution. Even with some restrictions, like Debate where deletions could cause serious confusions, it would put to rest a majority of the concerns that have been raised.

So maybe the delete permissions are set by-forum? You can delete stuff in Chatter/Sandbox but not Debate? Something like that.

I believe some sites have time constraints for deleting posts as well. You can make immediate deletions, but two weeks later, you need to get an admin to take care of it.

I think that makes sense.  Although in this particular thread, 5 seconds may be too long.  Also, if you delete it, but I have already quoted it, how would that work?  I would assume if it's already quoted, it's already out there.

The "quote" function just grabs the link the the post and the raw text, so editing the original doesn't change the quote (hence the "QFT" phenomenon). I'd imagine you'd have to request it of the quoter.

It seems for most situations to be a lot more heat than light.  You get a little pissed, say a few harsh things, and later go back and modify or edit the post to tone it down.  No big deal.

If someone's feeling heat from external forces because their anonymity has been broken, and they want to delete things that can be used against them in embarassing or economically costly ways like job loss, I would think there would be accommodation.  Here I guess I side with the user being allowed to do a wholesale delete.

On the other hand, I can see folks wishing to pull stuff in a fit of pique on the way out the door.  In that regard I would think Kyle justified in wishing to avoid the wholesale deletions.

But how is one able to objectively distinguish between "A bitch at work is threatening to show this to my boss" and someone who just has a bug up their ass?

I certainly would not personally try to sit down and wipe out 3,000+ plus posts just to be a dick, but if I felt there was threat to me, I would like the assurance the owners of the joint would help me out and not put "defacement" over a potentially material loss I might incur if the stuff stayed up.

I'm not saying you would, Kyle.  I'm just saying the issue makes me a little uneasy.
