This comic is fantastic, although it confuses my wife, I'm busting a gut laughing and when she asks what's so funny I say somthing like "he forrier transformed his cat!" or "sudo make me a sandwich!"  It makes me realize what a nerd I am.

I love how if you've never read the book, you'd just be plain confused there.

Snarky hedgehog

When Ender was trying to get his team to win the zer-gee little training battles, he struck upon the idea of telling them to think of the other team's gate as being below them. Then they would 'fall' towards it. Since their brains were better at the idea of falling at something than whooshing through zero-gee, they did well. The other team was taken unawares because they were still thinking of themselves as fighting 'flying' foes, not 'falling' foes. Manipulating personal perception for victory and all that junk.

This is where I say something clever.

Actually, there's another layer of meaning to that "The enemy's gate is down" as well. All of Ender's battle school training is warm up for an interplanetary war, and the gates represent the enemy planet. Ender is so fucking smart he manages to intuit that. It's a nice bit of depth. (no pun intended.)

But how does that make "The enemy gate is down" into a joke/double entendre?

There was a system crash, so the enemy's gate is down...

Yeah, but, how is the enemies gate as representative of the enemies planet down?

Unless system means... solar system, or something?

I hunger.

There was a system crash - computer system controlling the battle room, hence the gate being "down..." down as in... no longer working.

Given that Ender had his troops think of the enemy's gate as being below them, the gate would be "down" as in the direction.

If you still don't get it, I'm not sure you ever will.

If you were talking about what Anumati meant by her bringing up the double meaning, all she was saying was that Ender was thinking of the enemy gate in the battle room as being the final objective, which he viewed as the enemy planet.  in the long run that part doesn't really have anything to do with the joke.

Sorry should have been more clear I was just commenting on the book not the joke in the comic.
