Girl Genius
« on: July 05, 2006, 09:23:14 PM »
Does anyone know of a place where I can read the part of Girl Genius between the beginning and Advanced class on their website?  I... would love to support them and buy the dead tree copies (and will when I can), but I'm so sick of waiting for the beginner class to catch up and I'm going to get to read it all for free anyway, right?  I mean, it's all been posted at some time or another, I just want to read it now.

Help?

No idea, dude. I happened to catch it when it was all up.

Other than buying them, I don't think that they're available online until he posts them. The first 7-10 issues or so (The Beginners Class) were released only in dead tree format. Then he had publishing issues, and then he ended up publishing them online instead.

End result? He's more ontime than I've ever seen for any of his other stuff. He's had a tendency to get the first couple/few issues out and then start falling way behind.

So who's actually caught up?

As in, you don't bother reading 101 because you know all of that already oOr maybe you do read it anyway, but you still know it already)?

(Personally, I put Girl Genius on my Wish List because I don't want to wait for August 2007 or whenever it is for the 101 Class to connect up with the Advanced Class.)

I was lucky enough to have heard about GG before it ever came out, because I've been a Phil Foglio fan for many years. So I've caught up, because I was already reading it. And I've been keeping up, every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Why do you ask?

I read it all when it was there, and I am "caught up". I've also read the shorts.

Woah, I was not at all interested in this until you mentioned Phil Foglio... damn I don't need another webcomic.

Let me get my one and only complaint out of the way (because I would love to be shown why this isn't the case):

Does it ever seem like we are being given less of the story than we deserve?  That people act strangely and for reasons that can't be fathomed?

I don't just mean stereotypical plot, but things that make you say to yourself, "Why did this minor character do that?  Why did s/he reaction in this way?  If I or a dozen people I know or the average person or the average person who lived a life like this one did (to the best of my knowledge) was in that particular situation, none of us would have reacted that way.

(I can dig up examples if you want.  It's minor things, really.)

Well, I think that's typical of Foglio.  Long running jokes, long running storylines.  So far this is really good and I'm probably going to buy the paper versions of these.  I love Foglio.  Foglio-fanboi!

dadu - Meh.  I love Foglio too, but my commentary was on more the minor characters.

Also... today's Advanced...

Woot!

What Dagda said goes for me too.
I finally got to meet and chat with Phil at CC this year.  I bought the first two volumes of  Girl Genius, and he signed them.

Not to agree with 'Fleas, but even Phil has conceded that minor characters, or "extras", have much less depth than central ones, and can even be one dimensional at times.

Though "Even a dumb schlepp can have a moment of brilliance. It happens."

It's apparent in the artwork too, the more important a character is the more detail they get.

What's up with the Advanced for today?  It's showing that it's ready, but nothing is coming up!

[Girl Genius] Plot and Foreshadowing in Gaslamp Fantasy

It was a dark and stormy night.... but deep in the laboratories at the Miskatonic Institute of Technocracy...

[pulls switch]

FLASH!

They laughed at me! But look at it now! THIS THREAD..... LIVES!!! *clap of thunder*

....I know there are Girl Genius readers on here. This morning's page prompted me to want to talk about plot. Anyone in?

(click to show/hide)

I also have a theory about foreshadowing in the series, but I'll hold off on that for now...
