Cross Stitchin' and Other Needlecrafts
« on: March 17, 2011, 01:15:53 PM »
So, I know there're at least a couple of us who do needlework... So hopefully this thread'll be of interest to more than just me!

I got bored. And decided to see just how well Photoshop makes cross-stitch patterns. Turns out, pretty well!

I'm going to use this thread to post the patterns I make that I don't mind sharing, as well as whatever finished works I end up making, be they cross-stitch or regular embroidery. If anyone else wants to contribute, they're welcome to! I do ask that if you end up stitching one of the patterns I put up that you share a photo with the class, though. :D

As an opener, I come bearing a Princess Zelda cross-stitch pattern! I've got the printable version on four pages, as well as full-scale colour and B&W previews, attached. :) The colour key in the upper right includes suggested DMC floss colours -- the number closer to the colour (i.e., on the right) is preferred -- but please do verify yourself that you like how the colours look before stitching!

Awesome! I didn't know you could make Photoshop do that!

I haven't gotten into cross-stitch myself, but I do LOVE how nerdy the needlecraft community is. I'm really enjoying reading through the archive of www.mrxstitch.com/ --it's a lot of fun, especially the NSFW Saturdays, which vary from bad words to porn scenes rendered in cross stitch. They also have a Flickr group where you can post completed works, which is fun:

The last thing I made was just a simple little project to keep me occupied in the lines at PAX. A fun little nerd-reference/embroidery pun. Not too neat or pretty, but I like it!

(I like this thread! Though I suspect "a couple of us" may literally be just you and me. ;) )

Cytherea: Damn, that's gorgeous.  My girl's already had me save those files onto the laptop.

Here's the question: any plans to do a matching Link?  Y'need the full set!

Pixie: Hahaha, that's a fantastic pun! And I like how it turned out -- for quick work in a line, especially! Your handwriting's neater than mine for sure, and I like the alternating colours on the 'fringe' on the edges of the towel. :yeah:

And, psh, even if it is just the two of is, that's still fun. :D

Valdrin: Hah, of course I'll be doing a Link! I want to do a Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Daisy, too, and probably a Hyrule Crest and maybe some of the villains, haha. Though Daisy's going to be the hard one of the first several; I don't have art for her yet.

Great!  My girlfriend'll be thrilled.  Hyrule Crest?  AWESOME.

I have to say: this has turned into her favourite thread, right beside the Cute and Fuzzy Things thread. (she loves cross-stitching)

I'm curious about how you got photoshop to do that!  I might be interested in giving it a try.

Okay, so, I'm making these bibs for a friend. I'm quite happy with the top one-- the picture is an Urban Threads design. :)

The second one, I'm not so sure about. I feel like I've been working on it forever and just don't like it any more. It needs a bunch more flowers, really. Some more outlined, one or two more filled in. Is it worth finishing? I just don't know if it's good enough to give away as a gift.

Well, I started with this tutorial... but made a few adjustments. The most important one being: She says to go with 5x5 "pixels" of colour, and trying to stitch that would make me go blind. Seriously, I printed it out and the entire Zelda fits on an 8.5x11 sheet of paper, which is lovely, but... the squares are so tiny, I can barely read the symbols.

Mine uses 10x10 "pixels", which makes them print out at a much more readable size, and I spent a couple of hours designing an even hundred patterns to use as fill for the colours. :)

Oh, and the mapping to DMC is done here via RGB.

If you decide to make some, and feel comfortable sharing, I'd love to see what you come up with!

...

Pixie: I actually really like that second bib! A couple of flowers more would be nice, but certainly aren't required. It's very pretty as-is! And, hee, I love the udder on the first one. XD I have no idea why, but it makes me happy.

I think that you're right, it needs more flowers.  Maybe add in another color or just more white flowers and go from there?  I think it's got serious adorable potential, but it's just not quite there yet.

Are you intending on filling in her name on that second one?

Yeah, I was thinking of adding more flowers in a couple shades of pink.

Ben was asking about filling in the name, too, and I think it would look better, but I'm not sure I could make it look good. I had a hell of a time filling in that flower-- terrycloth is just not a good material for this kind of thing, I guess. At least not for a newbie.

I'm currently working on an embroidered version of the picture my brother and his girlfriend took ( http://i1088.photobucket.com/albums/i339/TomRainford/Lichtenstein02.jpg ) and I am SO SO excited about how it's turning out. I've done all of Tom except for the near eye and the dots.

Cythy-- the cross stitch stuff is really cool. :) Once I've finished the projects I have on hoops and in my head, I think I'll look into learning how to do it. The counted stuff is kind of scary to me, though. I feel like I'll get lost. I'm not very good at following instructions accurately. ^_^

I was making a bunch of brooches out of felt and I made this because I got bored. The picture is shitty , but I like it.

I do counted cross stitch, Pix, it's really not that scary. If you're worried about losing track on the pattern just laminate or copy it and mark the squares off with a highlighter as you go. My problem is that I get distracted too easily, I've been working on 'The Scarlet Wizard' for about 4 years so far. :-$

You know, I haven't done any cross stitch in *ages* and this thread is making me think about getting back into it.  Wonder if my mom still has any of my old supplies...

I haven't done any in ages, but I've got three or four half-finished projects lying around somewhere that I always intend to get back to.  Maybe I'll find some time before too long.

I don't create in this way but I'm liking this thread.  I really wish there was a "cross stitch me" type program so I could create subversive cross stitches.

Haha, they aren't French knots. I just took bits of scrap felt and scrunched it up and sewed them on. Thanks though!

Not to be picky, but it seems like the speech bit should be over by the boy cause I'm assuming it's him talking about her. (Cause that makes sense).
