Designs for a new chess set
« on: January 04, 2011, 12:29:06 AM »
I was sat up all night the other day and got to thinking about a new chess set. I sketched a few ideas, amended them a little (very little, as it happens) and came up with the following ideas for pieces. I would appreciate any thoughts. Apart from file names, it isn't obvious so I'll mention that the running order is: King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook, and Pawn.

Also, board fully set - from the point of view of black.

Whoa, that's interesting.  Could you do like a four angle turnaround?

Forgive my ignorance, but do you mean a set of front, back, left/right and plan?

Sure, but I'm at work at the moment, so it'll have to wait until I get home. How many do you want to see? (If all - as a set, individually, or both?)

I would love to see them all as a set in the aforementioned multi-angle view.

P.S.- I think what you've made so far looks great.

Very cool design. I think the scale of the pieces versus the board would be a little overwhelming, but I am not sure if you even meant them to be that scale.

I'd worry a little about somebody seeing "cross" and thinking "king" or "bishop."

Also, the cross might be better for the bishop anyway, since it suggests the inverse of the top of your rook. The long, straight top of what is currently your bishop fits the knight well, because it can be associated with a knight's lance, which I think is sort of the basis for it having its unique movement pattern.

PS: The... "role reversal" hinted at by your king and queen is amusing, and appropriate to their purposes in the game.

Thanks - to the point of Knight/Bishop, I was attempting to allude to the shield design of a Mediæval Knight, while maintaining the Bishop as the tall thin character of most chess sets. I see your point though and it could be changed very easily, especially since the set is only a concept.

The "role reversal" you mention was somewhat deliberate, as well as an attempt to reduce the storage space required, although I did think could also be seen as a man's arms enclosing his woman(?). Mostly though it was a thought of providing a good, heavy queen piece. When I'm playing, I like to feel the weight of pieces.

OK, the different angles. I'll start with the king, and then move onto the other pieces. You'll note I've added dimensions (in mm) which will slow the addition of the rest a little, but helps with visualisation, I think.

Running order (which I'll keep for the rest as I post) is Plan, Front, Rear, Left, Right, Iso. I'm reposting the Iso with dimensions.

I'll do the set last.

The Rook.

(As the Rook and rest of the pieces are identical from all sides, it seems redundant to post specs for them all, so I'll simply post a "side" view, except for the pawn which will have a side and front/rear view).

The Knight (or Bishop, as Bis would have it).

Last of the individual pieces, the Pawn.

The chess set. (As Vel suggested, I only really include the board to give a sense of how it will look. I'm not sure if  it's practical having pieces that fill every single mm of a square. Hence - no measurements for the board).

OK the last set - just the white pieces plan, front, back, side and iso view. Is that enough?

Its reaaally nice how they look lined up.
Are you planning on making this?

I am also curious as to how they look in play, after some bits have been moved about.

I'd love to make it, but I have neither the skills, nor the time. I was sort of hoping someone here would have, and would be willing to work out some sort of deal?
