Put on your skates; its Roller-Jihad!

Woe is me. I've started down a road that can only end in blood loss and poverty-- making my own jewelery. It seems like only yesterday that I accompanied my friend to that fated store... yes, it was there that it happened.

My mouth went dry. My eyes wide. An iridescent seed pearl, a matte ring in antique gold, a gleaming hematite bead. Before I knew it, I was scooping up the prettiness left and right, my mind overflowing with visions of delicate champagne earrings! Of course she desperately tried to wake me from that shinning spell, but I was too far gone-- I wanted to, no, I NEEDED to make my very own earrings.

And so here I am now days years later, wearing cute eclectic cluster earrings of my own creation, and filled to the brim with pride. So please, share with me your tales of custom jewelery! How you came to make your own, and what you're working on now.

Pictures are especially welcome.

Hey! I do that too, sometimes.

What am much better at, is modifying and upgrading existing jewelry.

Mr. Imp

I've been getting back into making chainmail jewelry recently, but I'm unhappy with the pinch-cut nature of the rings.

I've been playing with beads and macrame lately, inspired by a friend who runs an Etsy store.  I have a whackload of hematite that needs to be part of something I can wear.  *nodnod*

I mostly tinker.  I've made a few things into jewlery of the 'hang this doodad on a chain' variety.  I've made the requisite thread-and-beads friendship bracelets every child who has ever been to summer camp knows.  I want to get into bead and wire work cause there's this really bitchin' new store called 'Off The Beaded Path' that I've simply fallen in love with.  I have these two painted bone donuts (~ 1 1/2 inch in diameter) which I bought some brass 22 gauge wire for, but I've been procrastinating on em cause I am rarely satisfied with anything I make and just know it's gonna be a hassle.

Where are the D&D minis? I have to see where I am!

I've modified some of the jewelry (why does that word look SO funny?) I owe and have a kit full of drilled semi-precious stones that have been yelling at me forever now to make something out of them, but I dont' have any sterling silver or surgical steel posts for earrings.  Anything else makes my ears bleed.

I want to get an engraved Medialert bracelet tag and stick it on a home-made bracelet, because all the ones I've seen out there are either really fugly or really pricy.  Or both.

In the event that I want more than a simple leather or cotton thong, what sorts of thingummies should I be looking at?  I've never made jewelry before but now would be a good time to start.

What about an embossed medical dogtag? I've seen 'em on Ebay out there for not too bad.

Fire Mountain is pretty much my all around supply type place. Past that there are two local bead shops I do adore.

Aw, if there was only something like that for people who wanted to make their own cufflinks. I don't use much jewelry, but I've been looking for a nice pair.
I only have to glance at that page to feel compelled to make earrings for the people in my life who use them, though. Must... resist... madness... Err...

I loves me nice cufflinks. Hard to find, though. Although E-bay has proven useful in that capacity.

The ones I find seem to be either super bland, priced at 10 000 SEK because they're made out of diamonds and platinum, or super-tacky and shaped in things like little "moose warning" road signs. I keep thinking I should browse antique stores, but earrings seems to be the thing there too...

Of all the jewelry I've made, this seems to be the only piece I have pics of. Which is weird, because I remember taking pics of some others.

All my cool stuff is still in Idaho, so I can't take pics at the moment.
