Nail Art
« on: January 24, 2012, 08:56:46 PM »
It only took me 30 years to figure out how to paint my finger nails without ruining the polish before it dries or chipping the shit out of it within an hour. Now that I've figured out how to do it, it's become my new obsession.

The first one is blue with silver zig zag tips. Unfortunately the colors were a little too close and it's hard to see the pattern.

The second one was an experiment in nail stamping. I haven't quite gotten the hang of it, but I think it looks cool anyway.

Woah!  That's really nifty!  When I was younger, I had extremely long nails, and I used to pierce the outside edge of my pinky nail with a tiny little metal o-ring.  That's about as fancy as I've ever gotten with nails.

These are super cool and I want to know your secrets. Especially the icy white over sparkly blue one. That looks SO COOL!! Did you put something down to prevent the white from covering the parts of the blue that show through, or did you remove some of it afterward somehow?

If I was still in high school, I would totally get you to do my nails for homecoming.

Narcissa: I used strips of scotch tape! I cut little slivers and applied them to my nails after I had painted them blue. Then I just painted the white over top and while it was still wet, removed the tape strips.

MAGIC, I TELL YOU. I assume you waited until the blue was dry... Did you do topcoat over the blue, too, though? Or just over the whole thing when it was done?

Two coats of blue (China Glaze Dorothy Who?) with a top coat of Seche Vite. Let dry.

Stuck the scotch tape to the palm of my hand a few times to remove some of the stickiness so it wouldn't pull up he blue. Cut into slivers and arranged on my nails. Two coats of white (Pure Ice Plantinum) and peeled off the tape while it was still wet. Applied another coat of Seche Vite.

I will be back to this thread when I am sober. There's some very impressive work than deserves more commentary than I am capable of right now.

Currently, the only gripe I have with anything is that #2 (the four-tone experiment in stamping) doesn't work without a rather specific matching outfit. It seems a little too... well, in lieu of better terms, 'specifically busy' to be a general-wear style. Keep in mind, though, that my specialty is not in cosmetics, and that it does seem to be a fun, expressive style to complement a red/blue outfit.

Everything else seems almost unconditionally fabulous.

#2 isn't actually stamping at all. I did that design with scotch tape. I actually just added colors to the first design after a couple of days.
I wore that polish for a couple of days with a few concert t-shirts that had two or more of the colors in them. :)

Oh K, you are amusing, even when not drunky.

One does not have to match one's nail polish with one's outfit, or even one's makeup.  I myself, have worn bright blue nail polish with a black outfit wherein my makeup is bronze and rose.  And I have a morbid fear of not matching.  It's all good pumpkin.  And if you want me to do your nails, you're getting green holographic.  No ifs ands or butts.

I... wow. You're more skilled than I will ever be, and I am torn between wanting to learn all of your secrets.... and never painting my own nails again and sticking with once-yearly-or-so manicures so my shameful lack of skill will never be seen by anyone ever.

The water marbling is time consuming, but isn't hard to do. The hardest part for me was dropping the nail polish in the water and getting it to spread out at first. I kept dropping the polish in from too high and it would harden into a little ball and sink to the bottom.  If you look up nail marbling or water marbling on youtube, you'll find a ton of tutorials.

My first not-so-stellar attempt at freehand art with a skinny brush. Will probably change this one tonight, but I haven't figured out what else I'd like to try yet.

Tic Tac Toe anyone?
