Pick me pretty songs to cover!
« on: May 03, 2011, 08:31:38 PM »
Alright, so, lately I've been trying to get back into vocals. I'm not the greatest that ever was, but I have a reasonable sense of pitch, and I really, really enjoy singing.

So I've been choosing random songs I know- and by suggestion of another friend- to sing as best I can in my own range, from a variety of genres instead of what I'd be tempted to do, which would be just folk music and only folk music.

And I've been them on youtube. I've got... like... seven or so? I don't know. I'm feeling a little less ready to crumple if someone tells me I suck balls now, so, sharing!

Anyway, I'm- looking for other songs that can be modified to be within my alto-semi soprano range, preferably ones I don't know well. Of the ones I've posted so far, I didn't know the lyrics or tune to Roulette or Solitude, and I think it shows. Still, it's been a really interesting exercise for me.

If you've got a second, or you're willing to double with yourself with a deeper voice or something:
Moldy Peaches - Anyone Else But You w/ Lyrics Small | Large

Or just this:
Moldy Peaches - Nothing Came Out Small | Large
Perdition | Brainspiller | Slices of Insanity
"Wasn't until years later we found out what fag -really- meant."
"-You're- a fag."
"No no...a fag's a cigarette...remember?"
"-You're- a cigarette."

You sing really pretty.  Thanks for linking it.  You're wonderful!

As to my suggestions, I would suggest When you go by Jonathan Coulton

Honestly, I'm not sure Wandering Star's the right choice for you.  Beth Gibbons sells the song on the back of a hell of a vibrato that I think isn't quite what your voice does.

Try out a bit of a cleaner, harsher sound.

Surely the hero is the one who rescues someone.  Not the one who ineffectually combusts under basic fiery conditions.

"Fairytale" - Sara Bareilles Small | Large

Pixie introduced me to this one and she is AMAZING. I'd love to hear you cover this song.

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom,
Man made up a story, said that I should BELIEVE HIM,
So GO and tell your white knight that he's handsome in hindsight,
But I don't want the next best thing!

Wow, Arachne. You have a lovely voice!

I really like this song -- a bit wistful but still fun. I also think it suits your voice.

*happy wiggles* Thank you, guys!! I WILL BEGIN WORK ON THESE AT ONCE. Variety. It is a spice and it is DELICIOUS.

So, any updates? :)

Singing is fun. I bet it's a lot more fun for those who can carry a tune!

I sort of had the sudden realization that if I can hear the upstairs neighbours vacuuming, they can probably hear -me- belting out songs... q_q

You have a great voice, lyrical and wonderful. If you're still working on this, I did once have a hankering to hear a female voice doing a cover of Johnny Cash's cover of NiN's Hurt.

Not to rain on any parades, but be careful.  The RIAA is trying to make what you're doing illegal.

Fuck the RIAA.

I thiiink that's supposed to be for lip-synching, which is moving your lips and -looking- like you're singing the song, but using the original artist's vocals.

Still, what a steaming pile of dog-crap!
