What the flip is it about me and poetry?!?
« on: December 18, 2010, 12:53:07 AM »
I hate poetry.  But when I don't try, I create halfway decent poetry.

And I hates it!

This was how I said that I was calling it quits for the night in another forum:

Quote
The land
Of this place that beckons
Softly
Does not seem to be
So far away
But rather
Calls
Like a lost sheep
Trying to find me

Someone please just tell me it stinks.  Things would go better for my psyche if I could reaffirm that poetry and I are like nitro and glycerin.
Conversation is nothing more than a friendly game of psychological warfare.

Well, the first three lines seem kind of weak, and your pace is sort of stilted, but I like the sheep metaphor, so I dunno if I can help you.

You mean simile, bistro.  In this case, it would only be a metafor if he snipped out the "like a" and kept it "calls/a lost sheep"
Yes, I'm crazy. Deal with it.

I am aware, but I rarely use the word "simile," because as I understand it, it is a subset of "metaphor," and the latter sounds better in most sentences. I was also sort of referring more to the way the idea sits in my brain than what was actually written; I guess you could say I was speaking metaphorically about the simile?

Simile and Metaphor are both separate subsets of figurative language, along with hyperbole, personification, and litotes, etc.

Similes are comparative: like rain, as if raining, as does rain. Metaphors replace one thing with another directly: sadness rained down on the city.

I like it, IF. The flow is a bit awkward at the start (read it aloud), it could probably use some tweaking. Not sure how I feel about "land of the place" or "softly."

The simile of the sheep is interesting because it's an inversion: generally, one calls to a lost sheep, not the other way around.

It doesn't suck, sorry.

I think it is trite and boring.

*sigh*

So far by consensus... halfway decent.

I think it is trite and boring.

Ah, but are you telling him that to make him feel better because he's asking for people to declare it bad, or are you honestly declaring it bad?

(Heh, wow, this is reverse of normal conversations of this type, isn't it.)

I"m honestly saying that I think it is boring. I've heard crap like this a billion times. I mean seriously? "Calls like a lost sheep to find me". Really? Tell me you've never heard something almost EXACTLY like that before?
