So I'm watching the Teddy Kennedy tribute, and I have to think, did they really want to open with him tooling around on his yacht? Kind of negatively affects the honorable champion of the everyman theme that the rest of the tribute has had.

Still, I am getting kind of choked up. Love him or hate him, Kennedy has done a lot of good.

Holy crap Bill Clinton's speech was good. Damn good. Made me quivery inside and I'm a married heterosexual male. So good that I donated money to help pay down Hillary's debt. After tonight and last night's Clinton speeches, it is clear that we're on the same team, and it is clear that they have no intention and had no intention of making this convention about them.

Agreed.  Brilliant speech by Bill, brought back all of the positive memories of the 90s that the damn campaign left me questioning.

Also, he went 20 minutes, when only allotted 10.  Ahhhh, just like old times.

I'm happy. See, I'm smiling!

Watching it right now. Only misstep was the comment about bringing back nuclear power. Other than that, he's hitting the right notes for pretty much everyone there. I like the comments about changing the political front. New politics for a new time. Nice.

And no matter what McCain or anyone else can say about him, I don't think that anyone can deny that the man is an amazing and powerful speaker

I'll take American History for $2000 please, Alex.

I think those mentions were essentially meant to both placate those independents who've been bouncing up and down about nuclear and "clean coal", and as a temporary measure at best until his "green collar" investment bears fruit.  I have to say that even at 45 minutes, that speech didn't seem too tedious, it was paced well and was very well presented, even though it seemed in the beginning he was borrowing from some of Bill's speech last night.

I like the clean coal stuff less then the nuclear power. But there you go. There are a lot of people who aren't as liberal hippie as me who do want both of those.

[Mod Off]

I watched the keynote speeches nearly every night.  I'm sure I'm not the only one either... but are you really surprised that no one wants to discuss it here?

The tone and tenor of the Debate forum as a whole has taken an acerbic bent lately (over the last year or so) with liberal views being seen as Right Think and conservative or moderate views dismissed out of hand as obviously wrong.  Maybe it's the mod's fault for not cracking down.  Maybe it's the posters faults for being too headstrong to consider the other side of things.  Maybe people just don't want to come see the same shouting matches over and over again.

Whatever the case, I thought you'd be happy.  You finally have a place where everyone posting is going to agree with you and no one will challenge your positions.  Too bad that also means you're all alone.

For my part, I just wasn't at all interested because speeches don't mean dick these days. It's all pageantry, and the D/RNC is Prom Night for over-forty millionaires. Look at anyone's voting record, anyone, and it's all uniformly bullshit on both sides.

What sinic said.

Jabba, you've pretty much shouted down everyone who doesn't agree with you, down to sending me nasty PMs in the name of 'taking the venom off-thread'.  I found some more balanced and less-abusive places to talk politics with people who understand the notion of multiple valid viewpoints.  I got tired of watching moderates denigrated and hounded out of conversations, so I went and found some places where they're still listened to.

Enjoy your silence.

Meh.

If people are going to be so childish that they'll hold grudges for months and months, more the pity for them.

You may have noticed all the liberals have been driven off as well. You didn't? No surprise. You've got your wish of a nice quiet orderly place that doesn't need a lot of moderation and where there's not a lot of debate.

And for me, if I want to talk to people with similar viewpoints, I've got DailyKos, and if I want to see idiots (oh, there I go again, implying that anybody with a different viewpoint is an idiot), I've got the comments section of CNN to look at.

So would you classify that as more or less childish than taking a shot at someone's back after they left the forum?

Way I see it, your example could also be seen as someone realizing they're talking to someone with their head so far up their own ass that they can't even see what they did wrong and instead resort to tossing around terms like "childish" for someone who disagreed them, realized they were never going to get anything like respectful debate out of the person and decided to leave.

I just think it's funny that the last time we had a major blowup in Debate wasn't even involving jabba and there were people who were saying "at least you've changed".  Hmm.  Guess that changed too.

I'm not defending jabba, or how he's debated in the past, but I don't think it's fair for people to be pointing fingers and saying "It's all YOUR fault that Debating here sucks".    Sorry, just my own opinion.  If the mods are going to ban people for being assholes on Debate, then that's mod issues, but even in the past when we had people like B en Natuf on the board, I felt it just made debating a challenge.   I don't like the tone that Zeta's getting lately.  But then again, I've always felt like sort of an outsider anyway, so hey maybe I'm just wrong.

I don't know how or why sinic and Badger decided to take my asking if other people were watching the convention, and turn that into blasting me. But whatever makes them happy and feel validated.

I don't really think its worth having another long protracted argument. There's more important things out there, like lusting over McCain's MILF.

Well, that could either be a Republican Convention thread or back on the old salt "And then there were two".
