Well that's the thing.  Those are interactions between people who know each other and know what the boundaries are.  It's a lot like tasteless jokes.  Totally OK between friends who both know what the other is comfortable with.  Not so OK with total strangers.  My roomie Charles is Jewish, and we make quasi-racist Jew jokes with each other ALL THE TIME, because we both know neither of us really feel that way and we're both comfortable with it.  I would never DREAM of making those same kinds of jokes with someone I didn't know.

I think he has shown common sense and retreated from a thread which was causing him emotional distress/was a result of him taking something personally that really was not aimed at him. If that's the case I'd not describe it as a "flounce". It's hard to back off from things that got you by the lizard brain.

That's a generous interpretation. He provoked the discussion in exactly the same manner that he does every couple of months. He's just huffy because it went even less well than normal.
