Probably not all that much as long as she keeps the child, marries the father, and lives happily ever after. Hmm, have they stated Palin's stance on abstinence yet? Id guess from the rest of what I've heard about her that she'd be firmly in the no-sex-before-marriage camp, but is she actually?

Yup.
Palin backed abstinence education
Posted: 02:00 PM ET
(CNN) – Sarah Palin, who announced on Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant, indicated during her run for Alaska governor that she was a firm supporter of abstinence-only education in schools.
In a 2006 Eagle Forum questionnaire, Palin indicated that she supported funding abstinence-until-marriage education programs instead of teaching sex-education programs.
"Explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support," Palin wrote in the conservative group’s questionnaire.

Not the boss anymore.
At this point, does anyone not a brain-dead right-winger actually think that the McCain/Palin 2008 ticket has a snowball's chance in a supernova?

The annoying part is that this will more stridently divide the country between the sane people and the people who view politics as the penultimate battle between good and evil, between Heaven and Hell, between the forces of good and the charismatic black Antichrist. I'm scared to think what these nuts will be capable of when they lose.
We would have been better off if McCain had just tapped Ridge or Lieberman or something, and the religious right had been demoralized and felt abandoned by the Republicans. Now they feel like they have a political party backing them up in their crusade, and the sad part is that they do.

The Republicans have done a decent job solidifying support from their core voter base, probably drawn in a handful of irrational angry ex-Dems, but alienated any moderates who probably were a toss up anyway.
This is the fun thing about your American politics, is that it really *is* that polarized, compared to say, Canada.
Don't get me wrong, we're far from a unified agreeable mass, and there's always the handful of folks who are at the far ends of the spectrum, but by and large it's mostly just varying flavors of grey with the occasional big divides. Part of it is, we're hard-pressed to keep railing back and forth on a social issue once it's been dealt with. Take the whole gay marriage thing. There was some talk in the last election about re-opening it for a vote again. Never happened. Why? Because quite frankly the majority of Canadians were sick and tired of talking about it, especially when we had things like, say, a tanking economy that deserved more attention. Also, there's far less of a religious component to our politics as a whole. I have no idea why. Maybe it's because we have some natural aversion of confrontation over these things. Maybe we really are that liberal, or maybe we don't get our panties in a bunch over stupid social shit when there's more important stupid economic, environmental, and war shit to deal with. Most of our major disagreements are with minor details, rather than with a position or policy as a whole. We don't tend to have that many major policy decisions that set us vastly in opposition to one another. Recent exceptions being the war in Afghanistan. But things like abortion or gay marriage? I can't remember the last time they got brought up in any level of serious policy-making discussion since we last dealt with them and effectively put them to rest. Of course, the lack of big highly-polarizing issues is probably also why no one really gives much of a damn about politics here as much as in the States, and also why, when coupled with multiple parties, we probably get a whole lot less accomplished.
But, I digress, we're not talking about Canada, here. We're talking about the States. You have two highly charged, high energy, polarized groups with substantially large support bases, which are by and large, likely to not change. Most serious Democrats are probably going to always vote Dem, the Republicans have a similar sized chunk of people who are much the same way. And then you've got that middle chunk of swing voters, which I figure are probably split into two relatively equal groups: the group that couldn't give two shits about most social issues and is primarily concerned about the economy; and the ones who vote based entirely off of pure emotion or feeling, or looks, and doesn't really give much of a damn about any issues at all.
Fun times with ballots.

By the way, perhaps it's time to re-do this poll, now that we have confirmed candidates and vp picks
[Okay, so technically McCain isn't quite confirmed yet, but, you see my point.]

The extremes of either liberal or conservative here love to bash the other side as unthinking while maintaining the moral high ground for their own party. The thing is, they're not really the majority opinion, they just happen to be the loudest. I think most Americans have the ability to make rational decisions and weigh the pros and cons of each party's platform individually instead of getting all hopped up, froth at the mouth stupid over the "evil" other side.
I mean look how evenly most elections are split. If you go
here
and look at the popular vote results (instead of the electoral college results) you'll see that you have to go back to 1972 before you get a really clear majority vote for one candidate over the other.
I think the republicans were thinking they could get Palin by despite her flaws due to her having a vagina, simple as that. I mean you've got the
PUMA
people who only see the election in terms of gender who the Republicans are trying to court. What stronger way to get them than to throw a woman onto the ticket? The rest of America... well... they've got a fairly short attention span and the Obama campaign isn't going to harp away on Palin's daughter because that's not the kind of campaign they're running. Unfortunately, I think in the long run this will prove to be a non-issue.

Da Boss's Plus One
I have to say I was thoroughly impressed by Obama's statement on the Bristol Palin situation:
"I have heard some of the news on this and so let me be as clear as possible. I have said before and I will repeat again, I think people’s families are off limits, and people’s children are especially off limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics, it has no relevance to governor Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. And so I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18. And how family deals with issues and teenage children that shouldn’t be the topic of our politics and I hope that anybody who is supporting me understands that is off limits."
Whether anyone is going to care that he took the high road is anybody's guess, though.
...and it doesn't stop me from baiting Republican soccer moms.

Horribly offensive and not as hilarious:
Palin slashed funding for teen moms
(click to show/hide)
Quote
ST. PAUL -- Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican vice-presidential nominee who revealed Monday that her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant,
earlier this year used her line-item veto to slash funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live.
After the legislature passed a spending bill in April, Palin went through the measure reducing and eliminating funds for programs she opposed. Inking her initials on the legislation -- "SP" --
Palin reduced funding for Covenant House Alaska by more than 20 percent, cutting funds from $5 million to $3.9 million.
Covenant House is a mix of programs and shelters for troubled youths, including Passage House, which is a transitional home for teenage mothers.
According to Passage House's web site, its purpose is to provide "young mothers a place to live with their babies for up to eighteen months while they gain the necessary skills and resources to change their lives" and help teen moms "become productive, successful, independent adults who create and provide a stable environment for themselves and their families."
Palin's own daughter, Bristol, is five months pregnant and has plans to wed.
"Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family," Palin said in a statement released by the McCain campaign. "We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi's privacy, as has always been the tradition of children of candidates."
Earlier today the Associated Press reported that Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, opposed funding to prevent teen pregnancies, a position that Palin also took as governor. "The explicit sex-ed programs will not find my support," she wrote in a 2006 questionnaire distributed among gubernatorial candidates.
Reporters asked McCain in November 2007 whether he supported grants for sex education in the United States, whether such programs should include directions for using contraceptives and whether he supports President Bush's policy of promoting abstinence.
"Ahhh, I think I support the president's policy," McCain said.
Typically I'd disagree anyway with cutting funding for unwed teen mothers, but this is just darkly and sickeningly ironic. The hypocrisy of pro-lifer Republicans really gets under my skin. They won't just fucking push
prevention
, like the pill, patch, shot, or condoms. They're obsessively pro-life... but once the kid is born, forget about getting any kind of support or help. Don't fool around, and if you do, you fucking better give birth and then you fucking better marry the dad, and who cares if you're ready to have a kid, who cares what kind of environment the kid will grow up in, and you better do all that with the "support" of a family that is horribly embarrassed by you and what you did. Really hacks me off like few things do.
The fact that people want to continue this foolishness fucking amazes me.

I have no idea why I stumbled across Glenn Beck today, but he was actually whining about how the media is all over Palin's daughter but they didn't/won't touch Obama's "judgement for staying over ten years in Wright's congergation".
Wow. I really just get a headache getting anywhere near that little toad. He must be grasping at straws to try and bring that back up.

In a stunning display of hypocrisy, it was Glenn Beck who, a few months ago, blasted Jamie Lynn Spears for being an unwed teenage mother.
