In fact we have had three in four years! Why? Because in Canada we love voting and we love minority governments.
Despite Harper saying that he's "thinking" it over the conservative party have bought up air time and made some rather... interesting commercials..

I'm not sure yet which puppet on the left is more appealing to me.

I'll take American History for $2000 please, Alex.
Hoo boy. Culd you imagine the pure psychosis the US would be in if we had parlimentary rules? With this current political climate, we'd have no-confidence votes and call for new elections every gorram month.

*facepalm* Yes, an election to break the minority government.
Oh wait, according to the latest polls I read, they were sitting at about 38 percent of the vote, with another 25-26 for the both Liberals and the NDP. So, we'd get.... *gasp* Another minority government!
*facepalm*

It's a joke. Laugh.
Frankly, if the government can't decide on a majority course of action, then maybe they
shouldn't
be doing anything.
Working as intended.

Just you wait. As soon as the election is done Harper will start threatening another one unless the Liberals and the NDP give in to his demands.

...and so on. Until the public revolts and elects the green party into power with... yet
another
minority government!

Have I ever told you folks about my plans of an armed uprising/paramilitary coup? In true Canadian fashion, they would be non-violent of course. The automatic weapons would be loaded with blanks. Or rubber bullets with notes of apology etched in them. But, of course, THEY don't need to know that. No, seriously, I fantasize about co-ordinating a nation-wide storming and seizure of Ottawa, the provincial parliaments, and the city halls of several large urban centers? Me and my gorgeous gang of buxom badasses.
OH YEAH!

Canada's Prime Minister calls early election
Quote
TORONTO - Canada's prime minister dissolved Parliament on Sunday and called an early election next month in hopes of strengthening his Conservative minority government's hold on power.
Seriously? He can just do that?

Well he passed a law saying that he couldn't earlier on.
A part of the hold up has been getting permission from the governor general to ignore his own law.

Slack.
It makes sense, though, to a degree. If the system isn't working might as well call for a vote to get some fresh blood in to get government working again.

Basically, yeah. It's not like he can dissolve Parliament and just rule everything himself, though. All dissolving Parliament does is force everyone in the House of Commons who wants to keep their job to run a re-election campaign in their individual riding. Whichever party wins the most seats generally forms a government. If the party in power exceeds all other parties individually, but not together, it's a minority government, and then they have to compromise to get things done; if they outnumber everyone else put together, it's a majority government, and they can do basically whatever they want. Parliament automatically dissolves after five years, but no Parliament has ever actually lasted that long here.
(by the way: officially, AFAIK, it's not the Prime Minister, but the Governor General, who has the power to dissolve Parliament. Usually, the GG will do as the PM asks, but she's under no legal or even traditional obligation to do so)

I'll probably be voting green this year.
Either that, or register an official vote of non-confidence.
I'll have to do some heavy reading up on proposed policies and platforms first.

From what I understand, this works like Britain - and whilst the Governer-General (who holds all of the power reserved to the monarchy) and the Queen could refuse, it is very unlikely to happen. The monarchy in theory could refuse but it would cause an outcry (as the unelected monarch is refusing to do the will of the elected ruler) and I seriously doubt the Queen would run the risk of stirring strong republican sentiment, either in Britain or through her Governor-General in Canada.

Lovely. Now we can look forward to another few weeks of Harper attack ads.
Y'know... I could deal with them better if not for the fact that the man already ran an attack campaign against Dion a couple of months ago when there wasn't even a bloody election. That really irked me.
Ugh. I hate elections, just because the adverts piss me off. The last Conservative ad got to me, just because of how pompous it felt. And full of lies and/or misinformation. I don't understand the Harper appeal. I don't.
But... yeah. Yay elections! Hopefully the next PM won't have that "sleazy used-car salesman" reek about him. Unless we re-elect this one. Which might happen.
...the more I think about this, the more I'm looking forward to October 14th with trepidation, at best.
Ugh.

The first time I ever voted in a federal election, I voted for Chretien and his liberals, mostly because of my parents. I've discovered since then that I've got strong socialist tendencies. I always have.
If I WERE a voting kind of guy, this time around I'd be torn between the NDP and the Liberals.
I like where some of the federal Liberal policies have taken us in the past, and still have lingering confidence in the federal party because of the Chretien years.
Provincially, I wish the NDP had more of a following in Ontario. Call me a pinko commie if you want, but I like the idea of a leftist federal government, with a complimentary left-handed provincial government with socialist tendencies. I also don't understand the Harper appeal, nor do I understand how the conservatives keep getting into power on any level.
Then again, I don't like politics and don't follow the policies and platforms very closely so I don't really know who to support. All I DO know is that I've never been a fan of conservative governments in general, no matter what country they're in.
Maybe I
should
pay more attention.

I've got a saying.
Whether or not you pay attention to politics, politics will pay attention to you.
The things politicians do will affect your life. The taxes you pay, the wars your country fights, the environmental standards; if you get involved, you have a slight chance of making a difference. If you do not, you have
no
chance of making a difference.
