Possible. Likely even. Although I believe that Poland is generally on sufficiently friendly terms with the US to have done so anyway. Although it seems to me that the lesson to be learned from the incident with Georgia is that being tight buddies with the US is not sufficient protection when you piss of the Russian bear who is growling right across the border.

I heard a quote (in passing, so it may not be quite accurate, but the gist is there) on NPR yesterday from a Russian general who essentially said "If the US can take Baghdad, why can't the Russians take Tbilisi?"

This supports Russia's stance on their involvement in the whole thing. That Russian government is saying that Georgia invaded a legitimate separatist state, and that the Georgian army was performing acts of extreme violence and potential war crimes, so Russia got involved to help out the people of South Ossetia. You know, that old "We're fighting a war on terror. And terror is whatever we want to define it as..."

Why is everyone criticizing the US here, again? Sending in aid despite the risks is the right thing to do. Also, I put £10 down on this "not leading to nuclear war", you alarmists. I doubt they'll even be incidences of friendly fire- neither country wants an incident, and they're not exactly going to be conducting combined forces operations with each other, they're going to each be keeping out of the others way.

My internet is down and Ive been behind on the news. I wonder if I have enough time left on this computer to see what aid, if any, the UN has provided.

Also, I wonder if this affects Obama's stance of keeping Russia in G8?

Actually, a bunch of Eastern European countries' leaders, including Poland, went to Tbilisi to protest Russian aggression. The US is putting a bunch of fancy AA equipment in Poland at their request as well in exchange for the missile shield deal. Also, Ukraine has told the Russian Black Sea Fleet to go fuck itself after it left Sevastopol, a naval base on lease to Russia, to blockade Georgia. Nearest major Russian naval base? St. Petersburg. Interesting that they captured the Georgian port of Poti and aren't in a hurry to leave...

While Poland is generally pro-US, public opinion has been pretty divided on whether it would be a good idea to actually have ABM systems in their country, and I also suspect that this will make putting them in much more popular.

I suspect that as far as Putin is concerned, those countries' leaders can protest all they want, because he doesn't strike me as someone who overmuch cares about anyone's opinion as long as they don't get in the way. The guy is scarily pragmatist like that.

The Ukrainian thing about refusing re-entry to Sevastopol is more interesting. Ukraine and Russia don't get along all that well, and with the strife between the more Ukrainian-dominated West Ukraine and the more heavily Russian influenced East Ukraine, there is likely a lot of internal politics at work in that decision, in addition to the obvious snub at Russia.

But I agree. It should be interesting to see how long Russia will hold on to Poti...
