I buy most of my comics from independent comic shops but right now I'm broke and NEED to finish Y: The Last Man. So, I downloaded it. It came in .cbr format and also installed, via synaptic, Comix as that was supposed to work. It doesn't.

What have I done wrong and what should I be doing?

It's a joke. Laugh.

Run:
sudo apt-get install unrar

Or install the 'unrar' package from Synaptic Package Manager.

Then Comix should work.

The problem is that you don't have a program installed to open .rar archives, which is what .cbr files are.  Comix *should* be smart enough to call unrar a dependency, but clearly it isn't.

Put on your skates; its Roller-Jihad!

Well, I use CDisplay for my comics and it works beautifully. Cheesy

On an aside, Y: The Last Man was incredible; easily one of my all time favorites! I mentioned it to a (comic) colourist friend of mine and he gave me a weird look and said "yeah, I know it; I coloured a bunch of it."  And I was like, "oh.  Sour"

Chicken....

katie@blank:~$ sudo apt-get install unrar

Package unrar is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

Go System --> Administration --> Software Sources.  Make sure the Multiverse repositories are checked.

'unrar' is not Free as in Open Source so it's called "non-free", but it is free-as-in-beer.

There's also a 'rar' package that lets you create as well as extract rar archives.  That one is Shareware with a 30 day trial and then costs like $20, but it's in the Ubuntu multiverse repository.
