Okay... Uh.. guys...

I'm running Linux (albeit Linux for people who know nothing about Linux) now. Does this:

A) Make me more attractive
or
B) Make me more attractive

?

Any tips or tricks or reccommended programs you'd like to send my way to aid me on my journey to ridiculous geekdom?

Depends what you want to do with it, really...

(That said, there's no excuse for not having nmap ;-)

edit: More seriously, first thing you'll want to do is get yourself some codecs for playing DVDs. Standard warning: in some repressive regimes, these are illegal.

Run the following command from a terminal:

sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

There, job done, enjoy your DVDs. The encryption is typically cracked in negligible time.

Not the boss anymore.

Feel free to IM me with any questions, Tweak. I'm running Ubuntu 7.10 Beta, and I've been using Linux in one form or another for near a decade, so I'll probably be able to help out.

Is anyone not running Ubuntu now? I went through so very many distros... Red Hat, Slackware, Gentoo, Mandrake for a while, SuSE, Mandriva and what a fucking awful name that was, but I've settled down now. I've heard it said that Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'I can't configure Debian', but after years of bother it's nice to have something that works.

I use Ubuntu on my main box because I'm sick to death of fucking around with it. On my other boxes, I'll run Slackware one week, Debian the next, and FreeBSD the week after that, depending on my mood.

Ubuntu is successful for a reason. It just works.

Hear hear.  The other day I decided that the scanner hooked up to my Ubuntu box really ought to be accessible to the Windows machines on my home network.  And so, after about 45 minutes of futzing around with it, it was.  Not the weeks or months of nightly assaults on the entrenched problem I would have had to put into it under Fedora, or the flatout impossibility it would have been had my machine been a Windows box as well.  Just 45 minutes.

After using this OS for one day, I can say that I'm disgusted by the chokehold that Microsoft has on business and personal computing. It doesn't make sense.

It's a joke. Laugh.

Linux does slow down eventually, but you've got to really work at it.  Basically install and uninstall gobs of programs, then repeatedly fill your hard drive to almost full and then wipe a bunch of stuff.  I've seen people do it, but it takes a lot.

I'm so awfully tempted to just go and grab the Gutsy RC now that it's out. But I can probably wait till Thursday.

I've been running Gutsy since early this month, and I've had no problems thus far.

I think I'll actually just wait till 11pm. The ISP gets pissy about big downloads between 6 and 11. So I'll trigger the update process then :-)

edit: We are go for launch on this Gutsy Gibbon upgrade... 1,551MB to download. Good thing I waited.
edit 2: Downloading at 780KB/s. That's about maxing out the connection. There's some nice download servers.

... This is ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. My computer looks like a clown college just reprogrammed it with a bucket of whitewash, a very small car, a long plank of wood carried on one shoulder, and a hooter.

But it's what I get for choosing 'random animations for all events' in the Compiz config.

edit: Is there any way to have a different wallpaper image on each face of the cube? I had different wallpapers on each desktop back when I was using CDE on Solaris, dammit! I want a different Haibane Renmei watercolour on every face!

This is why I decided on Fluxbox instead of Compiz.  It keeps the lunacy to a minimum.

... Random access NTFS.

I am delighted. Now I can buy that external hard disk and not worry about reformatting it.

I have persimmons.

I am new to Ubuntu. I've got Ubuntu 7.10. It's not my first linux experience....but I am still very much a newb.
Advice for getting the most enjoyment from my new found toy?
Anything that will be really hard for someone who's used Windows exclusively for years to figure out?

Do I want to upgrade to 8.04 LTS?

Upgrade to 8.04: sure, if you want to, unless you have a Ralink-based WLAN card. Somehow they broke those in Hardy, and it's been a nuisance getting it working properly again. There's nothing wrong with Gutsy, though.

I think I'm going to stay with Gutsy for now. I was on help forums and on the phone with Ubuntu support most of last night trying to get it to boot again after a language pack update caused a system melt-down. Luckily I was the third person to call Ubuntu about that specific problem last night....so after hours of me fighting with it, he walked me through fixing it in minutes....and was the nicest guy EVAR. He said 8.04 has some issues right now...there are work arounds to stuff he could help me with, but there was no reason to upgrade right now unless it was killing me to get newer versions of some of the software. Which it's not...so I'm gonna stay with what I have.

Is it normal to need to reboot to get an internet connection if you are switching from wired to wireless?

No, that shouldn't be necessary.  At most, you should have to click on the network icon by the clock and pick "connect to wireless" or whatever.  Sometimes it helps to uncheck the "Enable networking" and then do it again and turn it back on.
