iPhone 4 won't play audio when charger is on

Ok tech folks, I need some help troubleshooting the iPhone 4. For some reason, I can plug in headphones or stream bluetooth just fine UNLESS I plug in the cable to charge it. It used to work but then a few weeks ago, it wouldn't allow it.  It acts like it's playing and the timer plays but no sound.  I can't figure out what setting got switched that caused this. Any ideas?
