Random Health Questions
« on: December 25, 2011, 09:54:08 PM »
I thought a slightly more specific thread for this type of question may make it easier for those with some medical knowledge to see the questions as they pop up.

This sounds like a job for.... Doctor Catfish!

Answer: head wounds, scalp or not, naturally bleed more than wounds elsewhere in the body. It's an adaptation to the fact that many important organs (brain, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, teeth, and more!) are in the head, have lots of very small capillaries, and don't regenerate well. As a result, the blood vessels there have fewer clot attachment points, so that you don't clot off vital tissue easily. This has the annoying side effect of also making skin wounds in the head bleed more easily. The scalp is even worse, as there are lots of capillaries up there to feed all the hair follicles.

It's almost on the top of my head in my hair line, so a bandage isn't really an option..

This is a common emergency room problem, so I searched ED blogs. It turns out... there's an app for that.

There are some things that can be done at an ED if the problem persists. In particular, they have surgifoam -- a gelatin "glue" that helps clots form. However -- surgifoam is really easy to knock off, so this doesn't solve the main problem: leaving the clot intact long enough for healing to begin. I'd try the bandage trick in the link and see if that helps keep the site undisturbed; making sure it stays intact for a long enough time is the key to good healing.

I remember when my brother cut his head, my mother tied his hair together over the wound to create a suture-like thing.  Apparently that's what she used to do with scalp wounds when she worked in the ER 30-odd years ago.

Exceedingly puffy eyes every morning, regardless of how much sleep I got the night before. Also blinky-fuzzy dry eyes for a little while. I think it is dehydration as it goes away as I drink throughout the day, and I generally do so badly with dry weather that unless I drink several glasses of water before bed and set up a humidifer, the hours of sleep without drinking will make me wake up hugely thirsty and dried out.

But still, eyes are very fragile and important...

Could this be anything else?

Easily tested. Try getting some artificial tear solution from CVS; use it right before bed and again first thing in the morning. If that eliminates the blinky-dry and reduces the puffy, dehydration is the answer.

Dr. Catfish: He endorses trying cheap, easy, and fast fixes before getting anxious about health stuff.

I forgot about this thread.
My bleedy head problem turned out to be a cherry angioma which I had to have removed by a dermatologist. Biopsy came back benign and it healed up well. Since then, no more bleedy problems.
