Vacation Advice - Portland
« on: January 16, 2012, 10:14:30 PM »
SexyGirlfriend and I are thinking of taking a vacation through Portland/Western Oregon around end of May, beginning of June.  We're looking primarily for a camp/hike/drink through the parks, breweries, wineries, with probably a couple days spent checking out Portland proper.

Anyone have any suggestions on things to do up thatways?
Surely the hero is the one who rescues someone.  Not the one who ineffectually combusts under basic fiery conditions.

If you can, stay at Timberline Lodge.  Gorgeous place and tons of hiking trails (also it made a cameo as the exterior of the hotel in The Shining).  May/June would also be a good time to hit up Crater Lake National Park, which is spectacular.

I don't know much about local wineries, but the McMenamins Edgefield brewery/hotel is excellent.  I highly recommend it.

In Portland proper, there's the Oregon Zoo, the Portland Art Museum, OMSI, Kells Irish Pub, the Saturday Market, the Shanghai Tunnels, the Rose Gardens, Japanese and Chinese gardens, and for an extra dose of whimsy you can visit the world's smallest park. (If you're looking for something larger, Forest Park in the West Hills sports 70 miles of hiking trails.)

And, of course, Powell's.

I could go on, but I should really go to bed.

If I could just reach orbit, then I'd be a wanted fan.

Do NOT miss the Oregon coast!  It's a couple hours of drive time, but a gorgeous drive, and some staggeringly beautiful coast.  The town of Seaside is quaint, I like Cannon Beach and Manzanita even better.  My grandma has a place in Nehalem, and Manzanita was the beach we went to most often.

I definitely second Crater Lake, as well.  It's beautiful.

For the city of Portland, I always suggest Powells.  It's truly an amazingly huge bookstore - really unique.   If you like books, go in with a firm budget, agreed to in advance.  We've only managed self-control in the past by remembering we had to tote the books home on a plane.  I've never spent more than a day in Portland, except when I lived in Salem, but that was a stage in my life where I didn't do fun things.  Time and money went to raising my kid.

Yes, definitely visit the coast!  Manzanita is great.  Also swing by Tillamook and visit the Tillamook Cheese Factory.  There are guided tours and free samples, and you can buy ridiculously tasty ice cream there.  And if you're driving along the coast, if at any time you see a bit of beach that you'd like to go explore, you can just go.  All beaches in Oregon are public.

And how could I forget?  If you're going to be in Portland, you have to stop by Voodoo Doughnut.  I recommend the Bacon Maple Bar and the Memphis Mafia.  And unless they've changed it recently they also offer weekly Swahili lessons.
