Go to your stats, put them out there to see. Let's see what we get.

I think we just proved it isn't stats. Julia and I have the same amount of stars and no where near similar stats.

Hypothesis follows:

I think it's based on your forum "rank." By default it's based on your post count. Scix, an "Addict," has six stars. Lorelei and Rev, both "Veterans," have five stars. I'm a "Member," I have three. From a look at the members list, it looks like we have the following default ranks:
* 5,000+ posts: Addict (6 stars)
* 2,500 - 5,000 posts: Veteran (5 stars)
* 1,000 - 2,500 posts: Sr. Member (4 stars)
* 100 - 1,000 posts: Member (3 stars)
* 50 - 100 posts: Jr. Member (2 stars)
* 0 - 50 posts: Newbie (1 star)

Then there are the special ranks. For the purposes of assigning stars, these seem to override your regular rank. These include:
* Game Master (4 stars)
* Administrator (5 red stars)
* I've donated. Why haven't you? (5 stars)
* Guinea Pig (1 star)
...and perhaps others

Most of it makes sense, except why is Crystal a "Guinea Pig" and why do "Guinea Pigs" only get one star? I guess Kyle will have to answer that one.
