Well, once more I have nothing better to be doing on a Saturday night. TARDIS time!

I wasn't too impressed with last week's show, but this week I think the new Doctor really got going. With werewolves. And kung fu monks. I thought kung fu monks were traditionally Chinese, not Scottish, but there you go.

I was watching on my own tonight, but I'll see the repeat tomorrow with Little Sister. There were some scenes I imagine will upset the kiddies. We didn't _see_ anyone get horribly mauled and messily devoured, but going by the sound some really horrible stuff happened _just_ off camera.

Oh, one other thing before we go into spoiler land: the new Doctor has impeccable musical taste.

We're only just seeing the first season here in Boston. Last nigt was satellite 5 featuring a very cold, blue-white and obsequious Shaun of the Dead. Booyah! I loves this new Doctor. Eccleston is fast approaching Depp and Mortensen in my personal hot-guy-actors listing.

Satellite 5. The Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfor. Fabulous name. Good episode, but overshadowed by the awesome episode before it, the great episode after it, and the two-parter after that which is probably best not watched after dark. I did like Simon Pegg, though... I would have loved to see his face when they came to him and said 'hey, how would you like to be a Doctor Who villain?' :-)

Oh, and the Doctor got shot of Adam. Annoying little git that he is. Wouldn't be surprised to see him make a comeback as a villain at some point, though; he's still a genius, but now he's a genius who knows that time travel is possible, who has seen far-future technology in action even if the Doctor deleted his download of the details, who has a background in reverse-engineering this stuff, and who has reason to be bloody pissed off.

And the Doctor left him in England, circa, what, 2015 or so? I bet he'll join UNIT or Torchwood, and start doing something all conspiracy-theory.

I like the future ones better than the historical ones, mainly because the historical ones try way too hard to get authentic sounding "Ye Olde Dialogue". ^_^

That said, I like the modern day ones best of all, so I'm  looking forward to next week. Mickey and Jackie are a delight. :D

I wouldn't introduce him this year, but maybe next time around. You don't want to overdo it. We've got people watching now who don't remember the old days at all - indeed, they'd be the primary audience of under-twelves.

Last year they were introduced to the Doctor, the TARDIS, the Daleks and regeneration. Quite a bit to take in. This year, they're getting the return of former companions, the Cybermen and, so we're told, off-Earth journeys (New Earth doesn't really count, though...) A bit at a time. You don't want to throw every single villain at them all at once - you need to leave room for new frights :-)

What's next? I think maybe the Christmas special should be 'The Three Doctors'. Those crossovers were always good fun, even though they were almost invariably very silly. THIS crossover, however, would have to be about the Time War. The Ninth said it couldn't or shouldn't be done, but the Tenth likes impossible. Go back and try to save Gallifrey. He'll fail, of course, but in the process we get to give Paul McGann an airing (and it doesn't matter if he looks older, because we don't know how long it's been for him) and half way through regenerate him... Shameless fanwank, and perhaps the Time War is best left vague, but damn, would it be fun.

Something I didn't notice before, which has been drawn to my attention:

The name the Doctor gives to Victoria?

"Dr Jamie McCrimmon"

Now THERE'S a long memory for you. Assuming the name of a Scotsman he used to go around with eight lifetimes ago...

Hey, it's that time of the week again!

'School Reunion': very good episode dripping in nostalgia and showing us how terribly far from perfect the Doctor can be. As has been heavily trailed, it brings Sarah Jane Smith back into the show; she was last seen in Tom Baker's time, having been dropped off along with K-9 in what was supposed to be Hillview Road, South Croydon, but which probably wasn't thanks to the usual inaccuracy of the TARDIS - and she provides an opportunity to return to the idea we saw raised in The Parting of the Ways - what do you DO if you're an ex-companion? How can you go back to an ordinary life after serving as TARDIS crew?

Buh? It's going again? Dammit, it figures it started up again the month I stop checking for new episodes. I've been very, very antsy for new Who since December.

*runs off to catch up with the episodes*

(Oh, and a side-note to my fellow Americans: watching last year's season of Doctor Who on the Sci-Fi Channel is not advisable...even though I've seen them all, I tuned in the first night of the American airing...only to find that they're pulling a Fox and airing the episodes out of order, it seems.)

There are some new Who-related sites. There's a website for a historic Scottish stately home, for instance, in whose tea room they serve Millingdale ice cream. Someone's been emailing Mickey to say 'they're coming'... Also, Deffry Vale High School's motto is 'Making the most out of your children' ;-)

Well, I just watched "New Earth" and "Tooth and Claw". Before I go about discussing them, does someone want to fill in those of us not-so-bright folks (i.e. me) on this spoiler code everyone else seems to know?

It's ROT13. A Caesar cipher, with each letter shifted 13 places along the alphabet. As a result, applying ROT13 twice gets you back to where you started. So, for instance, The Doctor -> Gur Qbpgbe -> The Doctor. It's been used by geeks online to cover up spoilers and suchlike since... well, since back when they used to discuss new episodes of Doctor Who, as a matter of fact.

(Yes, there WAS an Internet back then. Google sees all!)

edit: Oh, and about School Reunion - I knew it reminded me of something and after a little research I now know what. From The Armageddon Factor:

Quote
Doctor: 'We have the power to do anything we like. Absolute power over every particle in the universe. Everything that has ever existed and ever will exist. As from this moment - are you listening to me Romana?'
Romana: 'Yes of course I'm listening...'
Doctor: 'Because if you're not listening, I can make you listen. Because I can do anything. As from this moment there's no such thing as free will in the entire universe. There's only my will because I possess the Key to Time.'
Romana: 'Doctor, are you all right?'
Doctor: 'Well of course I'm all right... but supposing I wasn't all right?'

Ultimate power over all of time and space... plus ca change, eh?

There's an aptitude game on the Deffry Vale website.  I've only tried it a little (and only managed 3/7 my first time in phase 1), but it looks interesting.  I may have to try a bit harder next time and see what comes of it.

Also, from the Deffry Vale community website, what do you think the Parson's homepage has to do with anything?  Was that one of the kids' family?

Mr Parsons was the history teacher. See here. He spoke to the Doctor about the suspicious wave of teacher disappearances.

edit to add: holy FUCK! The retro theme goes further than we'd known.

Quote
MR SMITH joins us as Ms Barrat's replacement until the end of term. He's previously taught Physics in Shoreditch.

Shoreditch, eh? Good old Coal Hill School, I suppose. That one goes right back to 1963. Never heard that he taught there, though. At any rate he went by the name of Foreman back then, not Smith. He went back twice after that, from what I can tell; the first time there were Cybermen all over the place blowing things up, and the next time there were hordes of Daleks. Not really good circumstances in which to hold an impromptu physics class, although I admit I wouldn't put it past him...

I'm still wondering what the hell Millingdale Ice Cream is all about.

Hahaha. Much more effective than Jamie's School Dinners. ;)

I love it! My favourite so far. Mickey is a total joy. ^_^

*sigh* It's so much nicer to read discussion about this episode over here than my Doctor Who forum.

It's all 'OMG School Reunion completely wipes the BBC books out of canon because of a couple of throwaway lines! I Hate The New Show!'

Here, at least, I can converse with fans who haven't forgotten the simple joy in being a fan of the programme.

On the other hand, I do have difficulty reconciling it with The Five Doctors, wherein Sarah Jane clearly met a doctor after the fourth, which contradicts School Reunion.

*shakes head* I'll stop there before I hurt my credibility as a member of the human race.
