Terry Pratchett's "Snuff"- Rampant Speculation!
« on: June 29, 2011, 11:12:50 AM »
...Is the newest Discworld book, and is set to be published in October 2011. Terry's emphasized that the word "snuff" has at least two meanings. It will be a Vimes book (eee!).

So here's a book blurb! Yes of course it is spoilerish, do I really need to put it behind tags? It's basically a book-trailer.

Quote
According to the writer of the best-selling crime novel ever to have been published in the city of Ankh-Morpork, it is a truth universally acknowledged that a policeman taking a holiday would barely have had time to open his suitcase before he finds his first corpse. And Commander Sam Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Watch is on holiday in the pleasant and innocent countryside, but not for him a mere body in the wardrobe, but many, many bodies and an ancient crime more terrible than murder. He is out of his jurisdiction, out of his depth, out of bacon sandwiches, occasionally snookered and occasionally out of his mind, but not out of guile. Where there is a crime there must be a finding, there must be a chase and there must be a punishment. They say that in the end all sins are forgiven. But not quite all...

I had a definite cheesy mystery novel phase as a kid - went to the point of taping episodes of PBS's Mystery! and have fond memories of watching Diana Ross be oh-so-arch - so I am especially super excited.

Here is my probably completely incorrect speculation!

Further - what crime is worse than murder? Hm. Genocide? Terry's his assistant has said that this book will be

, which we learned existed in the last book, Unseen Academicals. We know that

So, me, I am thinking that this book is going to be

After all, this is the man that arrested two opposing armies for loitering, disorderly conduct, and behavior likely to cause a breach of the peace.

Genocide is just LOTS of murder, after all. I expect you're on the right track.

I am additionally VERY excited about the City Watch police procedural TV show that Pterry recently approved. PLEASE do a good job, powers-that-be. I love those characters.

Wow, Tamsin, that sounds... that sounds highly likely.  I'm now kinda hoping that's what it's about, that'd be excellent.  I loves me some Vimes.

Also, Pixie: he did?  That... that... that... that could potentially be my new favourite show outside of Doctor Who.

A weekly dose of Vimes, Carrot, Angua, Detritus, Visit, and of course Nobbs & Colon? And to be done right, of course it will be bouncing between dead serious and Discworld wacky *constantly*.

Yes please!

ETA: Full press release. Same folks as the already-extant Discworld miniseries; that's presumably why Sir Pterry trusts 'em this much. I *do* hope they get the same guy to reprise as Nobby Nobbs; he did a terrific job in Hogfather...

I would just like to say that I was very nearly spot-on for most of my predictions, except the parallel to exploited populations was closer to African ones than Native American ones.

Also, "the best-selling crime novel ever to have been published in the city of Ankh-Morpork" is revealed at the end of the book.

Fuck yeah, Sir Terry.  :-*
