Ranting Drunk Guy

At Tora's suggestion I've started working on an Urban Arcana game again.  Won't be able to start immediately, as I'm planning to move this month and will be busy with that, but everything should be good to go in about a five or six weeks.  The game will be played via some chat system yet to be determined and played weekly, likely during late evening (specific time depends on group availability).

The party will be operating as a mercenary-type "special operations" team for a major power player in a post-semiapocolyptic world (WWIII scenario, most major cities destroyed, world economy trashed and just picking back up, borders redrawn all over, etc).  Their sponsor is neither good nor evil, per se, just greedy and power hungry and has plenty of jobs for groups like the PCs and others of similar skills.  The party will begin play at ECL 8 so that players can select races with level adjustments if they wish and everybody should have the chance to start play with at least a level or two in an advanced class.  Also, the PCs will be pretty well equipped and I plan to give each PC a couple of minor magical items specifically suited to them.  Magic will be prominent in the game, but primarily used as an "alternate technology,"  basically a different way of doing something that could also be done otherwise (simple example: fireball= big hand grenade, data read + degauss = hacking a computer and wiping the hard drive, etc).  Players should be ready to face high tech opponents and challenges as well as magical ones.  Keep in mind that magic and technology can be mixed, like nightvision goggles that also see invisible things (those security guards might be more alert than they appear, a +2 flaming Beretta 93r of speed (put that in the hands of a gunslinger with the Burst Fire feat and start counting bodies), tires of maneuverability (for when you've ran out of ways to mechanically trick out your street racer), etc.

As it stands there are two PCs already.  Arkana, aka Ana, a female gnoll fast hero/infiltrator and her brother, Arkane, aka Kane, a tough/strong hero (he might have some thrasher levels, not sure).  Ana is sneaky and Kane smashes things.  There's also an NPC, the party's contact to their sponsor who also goes along on missions in case something weird happens (*evil grin*) and confuses the objectives.  He's a drow smart/fast/techno mage (only 1 lvl in TM)and is sort of a jack of all trades, great at nothing but competent with computer hacking, stealth, demolitions, chemistry/alchemy, handgun use, and magic.  Basically, he can easily augment the party but not outshine the PCs; his main purpose is as a guide and a standby plot device waiting to happen at any given point.

Any and all d20 Modern and Urban Arcana clases are welcome, as are any race found in either source.  The one exception is psionics; I don't know much about psionics and as such can't comfortably work them into the game.  Anything else in the books goes.  If you're not sure what class you want to play, the group could use a soldier/gunslinger type (Kane specializes in melee combat, so a specialized ranged fighter would augment him nicely) and one or more spellcasters (mages, technomages, acolytes, and even mystics would all be great).  A character skilled at investigation (dedicated/investigator or even a field scientist) could be useful when snooping around on certain missions, and a fast talking charismatic type could even work as a distraction sometimes and a spokesman other times (there are at least two advanced classes specialized for such).

Anyone interested can either post here, PM me, or email me at Flushmaster1@hotmail.com.  Let me know what race/class you want to play so I can adjust my notes accordingly (wouldn't be as fun if I set up a brawlfest for a heavily stealth or magic based party, for example)  As I mentioned above, I'll be busy with this move for a while, but will be slowly but steadily building this campaign so it should be good to launch by early/mid February.

Not your typical chinaman.

I'm into it.

However, I know little about this so I'd appreciate it if I could be kinda walked through the creation process here.

The D20 modern SRD (System Reference Document) is basically the D20 Modern core book and can be found at http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/msrd

It also includes basic info on Urban Arcana, specifically the Mage and Acolyte advanced classes.  Know the SRD well; guns and rocket launchers are just as dangerous as many a spells.

Is there a way one of you could walk me through the creation process anyways?  I hate to be a newborn blanket or anything, but I tend to do better with something like that.

Also in other news: all games in the first post with threads in Zetachannel have been linked up with working links, so if any of you want to dance a waltz down memory lane, now you can.

The character creation process is nearly identical to D&D, with 3.0 rules.  Some differences.  You choose a profession, which is your background; blue collar, military, scholar, etc...basically this gives you either a bonus feat and/or permanantly adds multiple skills to your class skills list and may even give a bonus to certain skills (benefits vary depending on profession).  Then you choose a base class; there are 6 base classes, each based on a specific ability score and designengs better, to enhance your natural skills relating to that score.  Strong heros can hit harder, fast heroes can move faster and gain evasion, tough heroes can get damage reduction, smart heroes can plan to gain tactical advantages, etc.  You can stick with one or more base classes (no multiclassing penalties) or go into advanced classes.

Advanced classes are similar to D&D prestige classes, but are easier to access; if you plan for a specific advanced class, you can likely qualify for it after 3 or 4 levels in a base class.  Advanced classes are specialists; soldiers, martial artists, field scientists, negotiators, gunslingers, mages, acolytes (clerics), etc.

There are prestige classes, though in this system you need to be fairly high level to qualify.  For example, "Archmage" is a prestige class which requires a PC to be at least 9th level to qualify, but to get the full advantage of it would require being closer to 15th level.

All characters get Simple Weapon Proficiency for free, meaning you know how to smack somebody upside the head with a baseball bat and such.  Some professions grant Personal Firearms Proficiency (handguns, semi-auto rifles, and shotguns), like military, law enforcement, even "rural." Trust me on the authenticity of rural background granting gun skills...I grew up in the country with no cable and learned to shoot at the age of 5; that's right, I was shooting bullseyes at a hundred yards with a squirrel gun in kindergarten.  Regardless, if your profession doesn't grant Personal Firearms Proficiency you should seriously consider taking it as a normal feat or specializing in a non-combat field (meaning one where you don't have to shoot) because handguns are pretty much the standard weapon (most deal 2d6 damage, assault rifles and shotguns go up to 2d10, and a .50 caliber sniper rifle does 2d12).

Also notable as a difference from D&D is the massive damage threshold.  Any time you take damage exceeding your Con score you must make a DC 15 fort save or immediatly drop to -1 HP and go through normal dying rules, hoping to make a good roll and stabilize.  Consider that a character with the Double Tap feat can easily deal 3d6 points of damage with a handgun (or as much as 3d10 with a good assault rifle), nevermind magical bonuses, massive damage threshold becomes an issue.  Basically, it doesn't matter how many hit points you have, a bullet or three to the face can still very possibly kill you (fireball spells and such have a similar effect).

No class in the D20 Modern system goes beyond 10th level.  That's a hard cap limit.  Pretty much, you have to multiclass.  Spellcasters never get anything beyond 5th level spells, but with a couple of feats and a decent Dex score they can do plenty of damage with a gun and use their magic to creatively augment their skills and those of their allies; tunring people invisible, erasing computer hard drives, don't forget true strike combined with the Double Tap or Burst Fire feat, etc, and it never hurts to have a fireball ready to clear a room quickly.

I hope that helps give you a general idea of how to make a PC, if you have any questions either ask here or PM me.

Alrighty. Mike, I made this an official thread.

H'okay, also, I got you linked up in the Upcoming Attractions sticky. We are good to go.

Oh. Almost forgot. My brother has a PDF of the books, and is currently working to figure out how to get him off his CD storage.

How does Level Adjustment work, exactly? An LA of 2 means I effectively start with 3000exp before adding on exp, but Im still level one, right?

I.e, a character with an LA of 2 and 28000 accumulated exp is a level 5 character, right?

Or do you just calculate from zero exp, add the 28000 straight on, and are effectively a level 8 character where the last two levels "don't count"?

Also, how are we doing stats?

I will be playing a Blink Dog halfsmile

Im going to take a level in a hero class based on whatever the party needs: at the moment charismatic. Though someone should definitely take the primary negotiator slot, so I can maybe go for something else.

Strike my last post.  I want to be a Goomba Necromancer/Negotiator.

And if I can't be a Goomba, I'd like to be a tiefling.

Believe it or not, I can actually justify this choice with a full background.  If you would like it, lemme know.  ^_^

A ECL 8 PC has the same total XP as a normal character of the sam ECL.  They would only have 6 class levels though.

You can use Arms Locker as long as you give me the full stats of anything from it that you use.

Lonecoon, what class are you going to be?  I'm guessing strong hero to start, but you might consider Archaic Weapon master, and you can just swap "Archaic" to "Exotic."

A note on character background.  You'll be traveling the world with a rollerball team (see the movie Rollerball; the new one, the old one bites even with James Caan) as your cover.  You'll need to be somehow affiliated with the team.  Kane is on the team, and he's known to take off his helmet and use it as a melee weapon from the back of his bigass custom harley.  Ana is his sister and travels with him.  Other players can be players, coaches, trainers, personal managers or bodyguards of others, a media consultant and/or spokesperson, or anything else that makes sense to be traveling with the team.  If you have a suggestion on the team name I'll consider it since I haven't come up with one.  The team is based in the capital city of the nation of Georgia, the name of which escapes me atm.  You will be traveling worldwide.

If the party lacks someone of a necessary skillset, their employer (Markova Enterprises) can provide an NPC "mission specialist" at need.  I'm just waiting for an excuse to bring out one that was originally supposed to be somebody's PC but that group fell through: a goblin fast/speed demon wheelman named Schwonk who sits on a magic phonebook to see over the wheel (nobody else see anything except ears sticking up past it, though).
