On Being an Office Admin
« on: June 07, 2011, 07:17:57 AM »
Inspired by this post by S*S:

Business Support/any admin position.

Sometimes we solve peoples problems, more often then not we tell them to go away.

I'd like to add a couple more job descriptions/definitions to this...

Refer-you-to-the-correct-specialist Specialist
"Hello Admin! I need these materials for a grant, and also have some questions about filing the application."
"Okay!" *opens correct directory, looks up something* "Here is the name and contact info of the grants manager for your lab. I'll email her your needs and question and copy you on it so you two can work together."

Anything you can Google I can Google better
Learn site: and "" and -. Know them. Love them. Impress your coworkers with your ability to find any general information they need, even contact info for that professor who retired four years ago and moved to Switzerland but whose name and work is going to be in this paper from this woman who used to be his postdoc...

Why yes, I DO know where that is
It is right here, in this easy-to-navigate filetree/in this labeled and color-coded filing cabinet/in this labeled box in this labeled and sorted drawer...

Mind-reader *cough* I mean person with foresight
The guy visiting from Japan will need not just maps of the city/campus, but printouts from Google maps (see above about Google) labeled in Japanese.

"I need a pen."
Here is a pen.

If you're anything like the network support guys at my work:

"You want <person>? Let me just see if he's free..."

"<PERSON> do you want to talk to <client>?"

*<person> shakes their head vigorously*

"Hello? I'm sorry, he's on another call right now, can I take a message?"
Johnny is objectively better than pandalady. -K

We're distracted by the hard times, and the troubles that we make, let us throw them in the ocean, let it wash our cares away.

Heheheh! I do all those things except the Japanese one. I guess my job is marginally more meaningful and useful then I thought.

THAN! You're an intelligent guy, why is this so hard for you? I realise this is over the top, but I find it really jarring to read your posts when you use the wrong one :/ Sorry.

Brain can have a lot of trouble differentiating between homophones. Unless you carefully consider every word you type these things just happen. I had a lot of trouble with the "theres" until I started mentally pronouncing each word slightly different. For there I pronounce it normally, their I give a slight y sound and they're I give a very slight extra syllable. </ramble>

Would you like to know something unsettling? At my job, I am the go-to guy for my team when they want to know how to spell a word, parse a complicated sentence, or have trouble with grammar or sentence structure when writing a letter.

And I went to a private school. Weep for our nation and it's schools, Dral.
