What songs make you wistful?
« on: July 28, 2011, 10:54:37 PM »
Wistful:  Having or showing a feeling of vague or regretful longing

I was sitting here tonight working on photos and listening to an R.E.M. playlist on youtube when R.E.M.'s Man On the Moon came on.  I was filled with the sort of feeling I felt back in the 90's when I was listening to it:  a sort of wistful longing for change of sort.  Back then I was stuck in a depression loop and the wistfulness to change was keenly felt.  Today's listening was a sort of double wistfulness, both for having those feeling of then hit me again, but also a mindfulness that the time I had bound out in my illness then is time I'll never get back.

So what songs make you wistful, and what are you wistful for?

Ghost edit to add a link to Man On the Moon, oh and if you don't have a link, don't worry.  I'd rather hear the story.

Snow Patrol - Chasing Cars

It reminds me of my ex and it makes me wonder how everything went so wrong.

I love that song, but then I love all Snow Patrol.

Mostly, sad relationship songs make me feel better about the whole thing. They scratch the itch, express how I'm feeling and kinda... roll that emotion around a little.

This one sometimes makes me feel weird, though.

(I should be your) Girlfriend - The Servant

And this one often makes me feel wistful or melancholy, or can kick me into a full on staring-at-the-wall-unmoving funk. They should put a warning label on it or something. Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful song, but do NOT listen to it when your mental defences are lower than usual.

Radiohead - No Suprises

Can I ask what eventually made you bust out of that cycle, Ensomu?

Yeah, that's because you are AWESOME.

It's actually his birthday today. I am now extra sad about the whole thing. Sadpanda :(

Daughter of Heaven - Kate Rusby Small | Large

Not only is it already a wistful song and Kate Rusby's voice is perfect for wisftulness, the song has, uhm, associations for me.

It is like a triple whammy of wistful.

Snow Patrol is amazing. <3 And it was so weird the first time I heard them on the radio here; I'd gotten Final Straw from a friend of mine who lives in the UK several months before anyone in the States heard of 'em, LOL.

For songs that make me wistful... I dunno. I don't tend to download them; I tend to form strong emotional attachments to songs sometimes, and when the reason for the attachment is gone... I tend to thrust the song away from me as hard as I can until the association goes away.

I suppose Georgy Girl makes me a bit ... wistful in the nostalgic sense? It reminds me of the me that existed before I started "coming into my own". I don't miss her, per se, but I remember being that girl so much...
